Chapter 4: Engagement Principles
Introduction

Introduction
As we introduced briefly in Chapter 2, and drawn from scientific and practice literature as well as our experience we now turn to what we consider the three core engagement Principles of trust-building, action and outcomes, and adaptive engagement.
While Principles is depicted as one-third of our Best Practices, in a very real sense it is from these principles that everything else in our strategy derives. In many ways these principles can be considered the ‘why’ of your engagement initiative – with the ‘how’ and ‘what’ of the effort being the ‘process attributes’ and ‘process model’ respectively. As we discuss throughout the Guidebook, each of these are interrelated and mutually reinforcing elements of an effective engagement strategy.
This chapter looks at each of these engagement principles, how they interrelate, and the foundational role they play in the design and facilitation of your engagement projects.

Practice Tip: Engagement Principles
In short, engagement initiatives can best ensure success by paying careful attention to:
- building trust throughout every aspect of the engagement
- ensuring the process results in actions and outcomes that meet participants’ priorities and
- embracing the need to build a flexible and reflective engagement process around evidence-based goals and strategies.
