From June 12th to August 10th, I participated in an intensive Chinese language program in Kunming, China. Apart from classes, I also had the opportunity to go on various cultural excursions to other cities in Yunnan Province, including Dali, Puzhehei, and a few others.

I strongly feel as though I was able to make an impact on the locals of Kunming in terms of cultivating cultural discussion. I was elated to put my language skills to use, and actually be able to change the stereotypical views about Westerners by engaging in conversations in the local language, and following local customs.

As this was an intensive language program, the curriculum was very rigorous, but rewarding. This included 3.5 hours of class daily, 40-minute discussions daily, along with about 3 hours of homework nightly. Although it was hard work, the academic component was crucial so that I was able to effectively communicate, and be more culturally and historically aware of the region I was studying.

The primary purpose of this language program was for me to heighten my language level closer to near-native fluency, which I feel I accomplished. This skill will certainly be useful if I choose to pursue a career as a linguist. The biggest takeaway from this experience though for me was the new worldview that I gained. I learned so much from all of the incredible people that I met, and most importantly, the value of cross-cultural interpersonal relationships.
