I had the opportunity to travel to Iceland with the GREEN Program for 10 days to learn about sustainability and renewable energy. We were able to tour hydropower and geothermal facilities, hear talks on applying renewable energy, go on a glacier hike to see the effects of anthropogenic climate change, and explore the beauty of the country, including its waterfalls and volcanic activity.

Before this experience, I was never out of the country, and I felt like some type of adventure was missing from my life. This program was the best two weeks of my life because it showed me a different culture, different topography and wildlife, and so much more. It also helped me to become more knowledgeable about something I am so passionate about: sustainability and making sure the Earth’s resources will be around for future generations.

My in-class learning and academic studies could not have helped more on my trip. Especially with the processes that occur in Iceland, which is between two tectonic plates, this trip was a visual account of what I have learned in my geoscience classes. I was able to apply what I have learned the past two years to my experience, which I am extremely thankful for.

I learned a lot about where renewable energy sources, such as hydro and geothermal, are effective and how to apply these systems. Because it is my goal in life to do research on climate change and hopefully make a positive impact on the science around it, this knowledge of sustainability will help me tremendously.
