Throughout the post “How to Write for the Internet” the author discusses various strategies to improve the readers’ writing. While the author discusses many different strategies they all boil down to improving the visual appeal of the writing. While these strategies are important, properly incorporating them into writing is important to understand how to connect them to emotional factors.

The first direct strategy is to make points big. While the author makes great points about making information more accessible, the size of the text has a major effect on emotion. This is supported by a study from the National Library of Medicine where they found that larger fonts increase emotional response to event-related text. So while the larger text can help get across important information, it can be used to increase effectiveness if more emotional parts rather than informational ones are also included.

The author then focuses on communicating with the writer. When forming this connection it is important to build up trust instead of focusing on the most effective communication. Because at all levels of online communications if you do not have an audience trust you have already lost them.

Lastly, the post discusses the importance of formatting the text. The author focuses on keeping the writing and the paragraphs short and using headings, bullets, bolds, and links. Using short paragraphs makes the information much more accessible, however, they can also be used to reduce emotion in messages or place increased importance on the text by isolating it from the rest of the text. While this builds emotional appeal, using links helps further build trust. By including direct access to the sources or inspiration for the text it creates transparency between the author and the writer. Having this transparency can build credibility which can further strengthen the trust the reader has in the author.

  1. I agree with you that the size of text in a blog is critical to grab the attention of the audience. Increasing font size can immediately catch the eye of your reading and give them an idea of what to expect while reading. I thought it was interesting how you connected emotional appeal to an audience and building trust with an audience. Having credibility as a writer and getting the audience to trust you can help increase how frequently your content is being viewed. Do you think a specific media for internet writing will increase engagement more than another?

  2. I didn’t realize how important it was to make the text larger. I knew it makes points stand out more, but I didn’t know the research behind it, I’ll make sure to keep that in mind next time I’m writing. Also, I think that gaining trust from the audience leads to more success. If you are able to gain the trust of the audience, they will be more likely to read your work again.

  3. I think it is a really interesting finding that the size is related to the emotional responses. I also agree with you that the trust should be build up with readers. Do you have some insights in how to build up trust with readers? And do you think bolding the text and highlighting the text can have the same effects as enlarge the fonts?
