Nostalgic, dreamy social media graphic designs have been appealing to younger demographics recently.
As someone who creates social media graphics on the regular, I love seeing new graphic design trends gain popularity on Instagram. It gives me motivation to create my own graphic using elements of the trends and I get to learn new ways to attract consumers to our content.
In this article, I’ll be going through some of the recent social media graphic design trends before I share my overall thoughts on these trends. I’ll also be using graphic templates from Canva to show examples of these trends.
Revamp of the Past
Retro and Y2K designs have been making rounds on social media lately. Funnily enough, these designs aren’t trending among people from those era, but instead trending among a younger audience. These unique designs that the younger audience didn’t experience in real time appeal to nostalgia for a simpler time.
Dreamy Minimalism
I’ve noticed the rise of this trend ever since the pandemic initially began. These designs were used for social media activism and has since appealed to progressive, Gen-Z audiences. The soft pastel and dreamlike aesthetic mixed with the simple shapes used in this trend bring a romantic, feminine sense of aura to the designs.
Overall Thoughts on the Trend
When it comes to retro and Y2K designs, I think that graphic designers have to be extremely careful in creating these graphics so that it doesn’t look messy. These graphic design trends tend to use a lot of colors, shapes, and stickers to imitate the design style. This means that more attention has to be put on the spacing between the elements so that it looks aesthetically pleasing. If graphic designers are able to use all of these elements in a coherent way, they can certainly impress their audience.
On the other hand, dreamy graphic designs don’t use as much elements of shapes and stickers. Instead, there’s more focus on colors and fonts. I think that if graphic designers focus on incorporating just a few pastels colors for the gradient and use simple, but futuristic fonts for the text, it will not be too difficult to create graphics similar to this trend.
