Obama vs. The Breakfast Club

For the rhetorical analysis essay I have two speeches in mind. The first one is the speech that Barack Obama gave after confirming the death of Osama bin Laden. I feel like this speech is full of rhetoric and definitely was written to appeal to the entire world, especially the US citizens that were listening. This video on YouTube is nine minutes. I feel like that I would probably over analyze the entire nine minutes and end up writing an extremely long paper, therefore I would probably focus on a short segment of it or pick out the main points that he makes or reoccurrences throughout his speech. My other option at the moment is the final scene from the movie The Breakfast Club. This last speech given by the character, Brian, to me is full of rhetoric. I think that it encompasses the importance of the film and also serves to get the student’s points across to Mr. Vernon. I also love this movie and could probably end up getting 4-5 pages out of it. It’s definitely something that I enjoy; I’m just not sure about the variety of rhetoric within it. I need to analyze both speeches deeper before I make my decision, but I have narrowed it down between these two for sure. Here are the clips as well.

Towel-Wrap Gone Awry

This week my craft began great, but slowly grew to become a “hot mess”. When I first saw it on Pinterest, I thought to myself “Hey how hard can it be to make a towel wrap?” Clearly my initials thoughts were wrong because it is an extremely hard task. First of all, I don’t know how to sew and even if I did I don’t happen to have on in my dorm. So I turned to “Ok to wash” fabric glue. All that was needed for this craft was a towel, some Velcro, ribbon, and fabric glue.  I tried to do this craft on a Friday night, after a 3 hour long band practice while talking to my friend. This was probably my ultimate downfall with the towel wrap. I eventually got tired and just started to throw glue wherever I felt it needed to go. At one point, I ended up gluing one side of my Velcro to the same side as the other piece. Needless to say, I should not try to glue things and have a decent conversation as it probably won’t end well. When I chose this craft I thought that I could use it and it would be handy to have. But, with how it ultimately ended up turning out I don’t think that is going to happen. The first thing that I’d recommend to someone trying to do this would be to focus on what’s in front of you. I often got lost complaining about my lack of sleep or my annoying instructors, instead of making sure that I was placing things correctly on the towel. I would also suggest learning how to sew and use a sewing machine. The glue was messy (probably because I got lazy with it, but still it was gross) and got all over the towel. So if anyone wants to try this on their own, I’d definitely suggest waiting until you have a chance to go home and do it there, rather than do it in your room at 11 o’clock at night with your friend making fun of you. 😀 (mine is the blue one)

Civic Engagement Speeches

Regarding the civic engagement speeches I think that everyone was well prepared and had a solid presentation. Eye contact for everyone was surprisingly strong. In high school I know many people just stared into the soul of the teacher and looked at no one else. But a lot of people still were dropping “um” and “uh” often (including me). As for my own speech, I definitely could have practiced more. I was not as confident and completely lost my train of thought when I got up in front of the class. I began to ramble and I wasn’t even making sense to myself, so I could only imagine what the audience was thinking. Anyways I’m glad to have gotten this first speech for the class over with and I know for the next one to prepare for in far in advance, rather than wait until the last minute possible. Other than that I think the speeches were successful and everyone was well prepared! 🙂

Work In Progress-Civic Engagement Speech

I greatly appreciate my classmates who gave their speeches on Monday. Everyone gave a very strong speech and seemed well prepared. But, I really am thankful because I was able to observe what they were doing, and make that something that I could work on for my own speech. A lot of people would use “um” or “like” and this caught my attention.  While practicing my own speech I would think about trying not to use those interjections (sometimes being successful and other times not so much). I found it interesting that everyone had a different approach on the ideas of what civic engagement is. I really enjoyed the speeches where my classmates had interviewed a person of their choice. I liked hearing what these people who were “civic” had to say about what it means to be taking part in civic duties. The varying definitions were things that I had not even thought about and to me that was extremely fascinating. Overall, I felt like everyone was really prepared to give their speeches and ended up giving good ones. Everyone made their points clear and easy to follow. The first group of students who went on Tuesday definitely set the bar high.

Proud to Support

All around campus, there have been posters hanging that state “Proud to Support Penn State Football” and also “Proud to Support Penn State Academics”. I feel like both of these posters are largely representative of rhetoric present in the Penn State community. In the wake of everything that has happened, these various buildings on campus and stores around town are sending a message to the public that Penn State is still the great university that it has always been. I also feel like the signs represent the community’s attempt to keep student morale up. The scandal brought a lot of publicity to the Penn State community and I think that the student body is definitely getting hit hard. It’s nice to walk around downtown and see one of the posters in almost, if not every window. These posters also show that this university is not only focused on athletics, but on academics as well. In fact, if you talk to any student academics is most likely the reason that they chose Penn State. These is a shift from the media’s perception of Happy Valley as being a place where we live, breath, and eat sports and that is not the truth. The poster sheds light on the fact that Penn State is a great place to receive a great education. Lastly, I think that the poster stands to show that Penn State still is a great university and an enjoyable place to be. It represents the community’s support for the university and reiterates the point that the students are still something to be proud of.

Failure Craft

My craft for this week was inspired by someone’s post of chevron wall art. It seemed pretty when I was going through it, but throughout the process it seemed I had some problems. The tools needed were pretty easy to obtain. All I needed was a blank canvas, some acrylic paints, a brush, and some painters tape. I began by first taping off some continuous Vs across the canvas. I ran into a problem here with the length of the tape. I was being extremely lazy while ripping the tape and my pieces ended up being different lengths. Also the ripped edges made for an uneven surface (which became really visible when the project was over.) I then began to just smear the colors that I had over the canvas. I read in the original creator’s information that she had allowed her children to paint over the canvas after she had taped it off. And seeing as I don’t have small children running around in my dorm I had to result to doing it myself. I wish that before I had had some sort of plan of how to paint the canvas. My colors ended up mixing with each other and creating some other colors, some of which weren’t as pleasant. Another thing that I would recommend to anyone trying this craft would be to paint a base color, allow that to dry, and then apply the tape Vs. The painters tape that I had used ended up being too thick, and on the small canvas I had, it resulted in the canvas being extremely bare. So with that I’d definitely recommend the base color, even if you do have a large enough canvas or thin enough tape. It will end up adding more color to your painting and have a nice effect on it. Unfortunately, I’ll have to admit that this project did not turn out how I’d expected. It doesn’t look horrible, but it isn’t fantastic either. But, if anyone else tries it and is successful you should let me know how you went about painting the canvas. Anyways next week I hope to be more successful with whatever I end up doing!  🙂 (the picture of two angles was my model, mine is the other one)

Civic Engagement Speech

As of right now, I am currently torn between two artifacts to give my civic engagement speech on. The first one is a poster that I’ve seen around campus that advertises Students for Barack Obama. This is clearly an advertisement that’s focus is to get students to take part in the elections and also to support Barack Obama. I would probably go on to talk about the civic duty of voting that is represented by the poster. The other artifact that I am considering is a poster in the Blue Band Building that is somewhat of an advertisement for the Blue Band. I would go on to say that it is enticing as it shows various images, and then move to how it is a civic engagement. I could explain the dedication that is required and how the poster represents that.  I really like both of the posters, but I’m just going to have to sit down and figure out which one will better respond to the topic or present a smooth speech topic.

Craft #1

Anyone who knows me knows that I am one of the least creative people when it comes to arts and crafts, but it is definitely something that I love to try. So I’ve decided to challenge myself and mimic crafts that I have seen online on a site called Pinterest. Not only will I be having fun, but I will also be creating new decorations for my dorm. I suppose this will be my own little blog about how not to go about doing some of their crafts.

My first attempt was a decorative night light. The night light part became my first issue. In order to drill a hole through glass one needs a crystal drill bit, and unfortunately I don’t carry one of those around in my pocket. My next problem arose when I couldn’t find a wine bottle and instead went for a smaller vase. Another difficulty I had was having my new light fall apart the next day. I left my windows open with the fans on overnight and a few marbles fell off. Now I’m not sure if the weather is what caused it, but I would definitely suggest storing it at room temperature for the first few days to let the marbles settle so that it doesn’t fall apart.   Other than these problems, everything went well. All you really need is some marbles (make sure you have enough of the colors you want, I also ran into that wall), a glass container, and a hot glue gun. You simply heat the glue gun and then apply the glue to the marbles and place them where you want on the bottle. It really is a fool proof process. Unless you like being a masochist, I definitely advise taking it easy with the hot glue gun. Towards the end I became a little impatient and began putting a lot of glue on the marbles, which ultimately led to me getting glue all over my desk and burning my finger. For a finishing touch, you can use the drill bit to place a light in the center, or take an easier approach. I simply took a battery operated flicker light and stuck it in. It had the same effect, maybe less light, but other than that it was still the same. Overall, my first attempt was not as much of a failure as I had expected, but I plan on coming across more difficult crafts within the next couple of weeks. This craft is something that anyone can do it and doesn’t fall into the category of rocket science. I mean if I can make it look decent, anyone can be successful with it.

Do the Right Thing

Throughout the film, “Do the Right Thing”, the characters lacked any form of a rhetorical conversation. Each was focused on only their own opinion, to the point that it escalated to violence. I found it interesting that the people did not have any civilized conversations.  They were always yelling at each other and spouting out racial slurs. To me this was very aggravating because they weren’t solving any problems. This movie is a perfect example of how violence can erupt when rhetoric is not present. Had Sal listened to Buggin’ Out or vice versa then the whole situation could have very easily been avoided. Spike Lee’s use of vulgar language throughout the movie stopped the characters from having any decent conversations. The use of such words ultimately lays the foundation for incidents such as Radio Raheem’s death and the burning of the pizzeria. Also because of the tensions present, the groups of people were unable to reach any type of common ground, again laying the foundation for the future tragedies. I also think that the use of the vulgar language emphasized the power of words. Each group of people had different terms to refer to their opponents and this only added to the previously standing tensions that existed between the races. I personally did not like the movie because of the lack of concessions, but I also think that it shows how important rhetoric is in order to achieve a civil conversation. Each of the characters and their willingness to only have their opinion heard exemplifies how people need to make concessions in order to achieve some form of stability.

Response to ARCs reading

3. During my eighth grade year the opportunity for me to try out for color guard in marching band came up. But, because I was intimidated by all of the upperclassmen, I set out on a mission to get one of my best friends, Meredith, to try out. In order to do this I told her of all of the benefits, ranging from new friends to getting into Friday night games for free. But I also addressed the downside of joining color guard in that you would lose a lot of your free time and it was something that was focused on dedication. Meredith at first was completely against joining. Eventually I got her to start spinning a flag and again brought up the perks of being a part of the marching band. I tried to reiterate the fact that we would be going into high school and actually know the upperclassmen who were walking around. By the time the auditions rolled around she was ready to try out with me and we ended up being on the color guard together until I moved. On the other hand, this past year my color guard instructors at my school were set on getting me to try out for the Blue Band Silks. I was extremely reluctant to do so because I’d heard horrible things about college color guards. Over the course of my senior season of marching band they kept bringing it up. They used my own persuasion techniques on me, explaining that I’d get into the Penn State football games for free. My instructors also shot down my negative view of college color guards by introducing me to some college people and by using the fact that they were both in color guard when they were in college. By the time I was graduating, they had convinced me to try out for Silks and that has brought me where I am today.
