Paper 1 Ideas

TOM’s shoes is a great organization that has become very successful over the past years. The whole idea of the company is “One for One,” meaning that when a pair of shoes is purchased, another gets sent to a child in need. The strongest point here comes from pathos, targeting the audience’s emotion. It’s pretty much like-who wouldn’t want to help these kids? Especially with the link here, a little boy is telling his story while the TOM’s logo is continuously shown, which leads the audience to believe buying the shoes changed the child’s life. This attracts the audience’s attention because it is very emotional and touching. The use of the child’s voice is extremely compelling compared to if a spokesperson was speaking. The commercial builds and tells a story which engages the audience. It moves slow to capture every emotional point and then finishes strong with the boy’s happy ending. TOM’s makes it clear that buying these shoes is better than buying a regular pair because you’re able to give back (perfect example is this commercial called a “Simple Decision” – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S603eBdMqLU). This is where the logical appeal, logos, comes in. The use the idea of a simple decision as their reasoning to buy these shoes. The commonplace here is that everyone needs shoes and a majority of people want to help children in need.

These commercials are endless, featuring celebrities like Katy Perry, Jessica Simpson, Adam Levine, and Julianne Hough. There is a lot of appeals being made in these commercials, the most obvious being ethos. The commercials utilize multiple celebrities to make the product more appealing to the audience. The idea here is if Adam Levine uses proactiv, I should use proactiv. Logos is also a factor because they make acne sound like it takes a huge toll on your life and alters your confidence level. They really talk up the product and make it sound like an easy 1,2,3 (literally) process. The commonplace here is that everyone wants to look good. People desire the look of celebrities which makes them want to use the same product as them. They also believe that using the product can change your life by boosting your confidence and making you more comfortable in your own skin.

A Little Insight

IMG_0026Due to my uncertainty about my passion blog, I’m just going to run with the popular vote and focus on my life with horses. Being an equestrian and working with horses has undoubtedly been the biggest part of my life. I started riding at Briarwood Farm when I was five-years-old. My mom had a horse when she was younger which made her want to get my sister involved in riding. As soon as I saw my older sister riding, of course I wanted to follow in her footsteps and try it out. Needless to say, this one single decision to put in my foot in the stirrup for the first time shaped the rest of my life.

The two horses in this post are two of the most important aspects of my riding. The top one is a horse named Splendid that I’ll probably dedicate a whole post to. He opened up a world of opportunity for me that changed my life. The other horse, Chuck, is my own. He’ll probably be mentioned a whole lot too because he was a huge part of my learning experience. I have a very strong relationship with horses that many people don’t relate to. I’m hoping that I can put this relationship into words so that whoever reads can maybe understand.

Over the course of my riding career, I have learned more than I could’ve ever imagined. However, I didn’t just simply learn how to ride a horse. As I got older, I started realizing that a majority of the lessons I was taught could be applied to life. I took so much from the advice I got from my trainers and all of the time spent around the horses. Being a dedicated equestrian made me that much better off and helped me get through a lot. I’m really excited to share these lessons and give some insight to what horses and riding have done for me. Like I said when I was thinking about writing about this, there is a lot more to being an equestrian than what meets the eye.

Idea 1

I’ve been riding horses since I was five-years-old. Over all of this time, I have not only learned how to ride, but I also learned many life lessons through my instructors and experiences. I thought it would be interesting to blog about these lessons and how I came about experiencing them. I want my readers to understand that there is a lot more to riding than what meets the eye.

Idea 2

I thought about writing a blog about simply being a college student, or more specifically a freshman. I experience so many different things every day that could make for some interesting entries. Plus, since we’re all in college, this blog would be fairly relatable.

(Honestly, I’m still trying to come up with some other ideas. The possibilities seem endless.)
