Week 12 – Ethics

This week, we looked at some case studies that included ethical questions in research.

In class, we talked briefly about this quote: “The great secret of science:  it proceeds by the formalities of rational thought, but its success is driven by human values.” Nobel Laureate Michael Bishop, 1990

What does this quote mean to you?

  1. This quote is moral driven. It means that progress is driven by what we want and that can go with technology too and how we want better technology. A good example is cell phones and how we want them to be better and easier to carry around.

  2. Though ideas and concepts come through knowledge and rational thought, the reason they are created is to appease human needs and values.

  3. This quote means that in science you can go through the mechanical work, but in order for an idea to truly beneficially impact society, the consideration of human emotion needs to have stake in the project.

  4. The stakes are as high as they can be when introducing new technologies into the world through science but what is more important are the human values portrayed by the people. Applying science into your work is one thing but having a high work ethic is more important.

  5. This quote refers to morals. Yes scientists and researchers may be able do something, but they may not because of its impact on others. Although it is a great limitation on what we can accomplish, it is vital to consider because the purpose of engineering is to help people.

  6. In my opinion, the quote is saying that even though technology is created based on formalities and rational thoughts, its success depends on it contributes to human needs.

  7. To me, this quote means that you could accomplish all you want to in science, but if you do not progress with good morals or values then your work will not be worth the same as it would if it had good ethics behind it.

  8. It means what good are science and new discoveries if they do not match up with human values and do good to improve our lives?

  9. To me this quote means that although progress is made in science by applying rational thought to critical thinking and problem solving. If the progress made is to be moral and just, then there needs to be a foundation of human values to ensure that everyone can benefit from the improvements being made.

  10. This quote refers to morals. You can go through the work and rules almost robotically and just do things by the book without regards to emotion. However, the emotion is what makes your work more humane.

  11. Although science is driven by ideas and thoughts, its work is never useful if it does not include human values.

  12. The quote is saying that scientific discoveries and research is progressed through knowledge, but its real impact is through its morals. That without proper morals, science will fail to make the world a better place.

  13. To me this quote is just a reminder that although science is all about rationality and the scientific method, the thing that actually pushes it forward is the ideals of society. It also connects to the ethics we discussed in class, because even if we want to do some kind of scientific study, we must conform to human values.

  14. This quote means that humanities progress in science while may be based on logical analysis, could not have gotten where it is today if it were not for scientists’ and mathematicians’ and engineers’ innate emotional drive to make the world a better place.

  15. To me, this quote is saying science itself is a technical field, but it is propelled by our own morals and human thoughts.

  16. This quote to me means that scientific progress is not only subject to the advancement, but also to the moral values, and reminds me of a famous quote, “Scientists are so preoccupied with whether are not they could that they didn’t stop to think if they should.”

  17. The quote to me means that there are many scientific principles to be discovered, but human morals keep us from dabbling where we should not. Not only that, but human morals determine our priorities in science, such as the UN’s global issues.

  18. This quote means to me that science will always advance but the human race is the ones to turn on the inspiration for more. It is our job to advance science in the right direction

  19. This quote means that science starts out with simple ideas and it takes human knowledge and power to really prove or disprove that thought. Our past ideas create the science and innovation that we are creating today and it will only keep going up.
