Summary and Reflection

This service is our first time to do something for the environment. It feels good. We planted seeds in Glenside Elementary School garden, dead-headed perennial flowers back for winter and recycled them for composting reason.

For the first part, we bought cold-resistant seeds and planted them in the garden. We had classes all day, so we could only be there late in the afternoon. The sunset was very early during those time, so we had to use the flashlight on our phones in order to see and plant. The weather was extremely cold; hence the soil was all frozen. It took us a long time just to break the ground because we had to dig so hard in order to break the soil apart and put the seeds we bought under the ground. We had so much fun doing the work as well as working with each other. We do hope those seeds can germinate and grow up in the near future, so we can see the results while we are here.

For the next two parts, we did all the work in Penn State Berks. For two consecutive days, we decided to get up early and finish the project. Although the temperature was below freezing point, we did not actually feel the cold when we were cutting down the plants because we just kept cutting after cutting. When we felt tired, we just hopped on the scooters to transport all the perennial flowers for composting. There are mainly two reasons why it is important to do what we did. Firstly, there are certain animals in winter that would come out to eat those plants and ruin everything. By cutting them down and leaving all the roost alone can actually prevent those animals to target those plants, therefore allowing them to live and re-grow for spring. Secondly, the parts we cut down can also be used as natural fertilizer. They say getting from nature, backing to nature. It will not only get rid of any waste that might generate but also recycle them into something helpful. Before we left, we got to visit the garden and actually saw those composted materials ourselves. That made us believe in recycling even more. We all believe that it is not easy to take care of the whole garden and greenhouse. No matter which season, spring, summer, autumn or winter, there are so many things that needed to be completed in a specific season.

In conclusion, those works were pretty simple, but they made us feel that we did something significant for the environment. And more importantly, it made us feel good by doing something so small and contribute to such a huge cause. We were all tired after the hours were met on the garden, but we just kept working and did not want to stop because it made us feel good seeing all the great results. So, we kept doing work until all the perennial flowers had been dead-headed.

Humans take from nature all the time, but we also need to take care of it. It is actually not hard at all. What we did was negligible, but very meaningful. It gave us a sense of responsibility by doing those work, and we carried those responsibility into our lives. Also, we all worked together very well and became close friends since we had the same goal and mindset. We all worked pretty much the same amount on this project and we all had different roles when it came to specialism. We believe that whole purpose of the project is to contribute a little in the community, and more importantly, to bury this mindset into our brains so we can keep on taking care of our environment in all aspects.
