Team Frogger- 4/29/2016- Final Post (with powerpoint)

The semester has come to an end, so sadly our research project has as well. Maria and I spent a great deal of time outdoors/at Nolde Forest due to this project and neither of us can complain about it.  We both feel like we have a better understanding of what Nolde Forest is trying to do as an organization. EDUCATE. We have realized how important education is in the process of preservation and noticed how people’s opinions seemed to change once they gained a little information.

Attached in this post is our research presentation about the threats to biodiversity in Nolde Forest as well as Nolde Forest as a whole. Hope you enjoy!

Team Frogger- 4/19/2016- EARTH DAY

TODAY WAS EARTH DAY (kinda). During our class period we had the opportunity to present our research to the people of the Gaige building.  We got to display our information, speak about our volunteer work, and take a look at our classmate’s research as well. It was interesting to see the wide array of topics that our classmates chose, and I loved to see all the beautiful posters.

Team Frogger- 4/12/2016- In Class Work Day

Today, during our in-class work session we discussed how we would do our class presentation as well as our Earth Day poster/interaction. We began to put finishing touches on our powerpoint and started to fine tune our essay. We decided that we would finish our poster during the Thursday work session and have everything completed before our presentation date.

Team Frogger- 4/7/2016- Nolde Forest Open House

As part of our service hours, we attended and helped out at, one of the Nolde Forest Open Houses. This particular day was rather cold and windy which we believe impacted the number of people to showed up to partake in the activities. First, there was a tour of the Mansion. Then, there was a presentation about animal nests followed by a walking tour of part of the park so to spot some nests in the wild. After returning from the walking tour there was an activity where any kids in attendance could make their own nests (this is the activity that we helped with). The kids were supplied with sticks, string, mud, and feathers along with numerous other random things to create their personal nest. Overall, this was a very informative and hands-on experience and we believe the kids had a great time!

Team Frogger- 3/1/2016- Research Topic

IMG_4888

Both Maria and I (Brennan) are Berks County natives and were immediately drawn to working with Nolde Forest. Since we both visit regularly, to walk with our dogs, our initial research ideas were solely based on our personal observations while in the park. We talked about how we both noticed a fair amount of (what we guessed to be) parasites in the trees and wondered if they were harmful to their hosts, as well as if they impacted any other surrounding organisms. Shown in the picture above is one of the things we assumed to be parasites attached to a tree branch.

After discussing the idea more, we decided that our research topic would include parasites but be more broad. We are going to research the general threats to biodiversity within Nolde Forest.
