Earthlings Wrap Up EACAP

Reflecting back on our EACAP project, our team had lots of fun going to Glenside Elementary to create STEAM activities for the kindergarteners to participate in. Our STEAM kits taught the students important topics about the environment and they also went along with what they were learning about in class. First, we met with the teacher who we teamed up with to figure out what topics we should make our projects relate to. She gave us a whole list of science topics they already covered or were going to cover. Our team had two visits at Glenside Elementary where we completed activities with the kindergarten students. Here, we split the classroom into different groups. At Ashley’s group she taught the students about the life cycle of a plant and they got to plant their own lima bean. At Vinny’s group, the students learned about habitats and specifically how birds create nest. On his poster, he included what birds make their nests out of. At Quinn’s group, students learned the components of the life cycle and were able to make their own rain in a cup to better understand how the water cycle works. At Caroline’s group, students learned about why recycling is important and water pollution. The students participated in a game where they had to race to pull trash out of a bucket filled with water and plastic sea animals to represent the ocean. In the lobby of Gaige, our group informed other classmates and the public about what our EACAP project consisted of. We believe we made an impact on the kindergarteners of Glenside Elementary. They seemed to take away a lot from the STEAM activities we created for them, and they also seemed to enjoy having younger people and new faces in their classroom. We hope everyone enjoyed it learning about what we did for our EACAP project!

Making an Impact at Glenside

New and Improved

To make our project better, our team is going to add more activities for the students at Glenside Elementary to complete. Today, Ashley, Vinny, Quinn and I decided that we are going to split the class into four groups and have a different STEAM project at each station. From here, the students can rotate around to each station and they will be able to complete each activity. We will keep the “Rain in a Jar” activity and add on a planting seed activity, a trash/recycling sorting activity, and a build your own bird nest activity. Our next step is to purchase the materials needed to complete this project, make posters to go along with each project and put everything together.

Glenside Elementary STEAM Project

After meeting with a kindergarten teacher at Glenside Elementary in Reading we discussed with her what the goal of our project was. We will be creating a weather related science activity for the students and presenting it to them to complete. Because they are learning about weather systems, our group has decided the kindergarten class will make “rain in a jar”. This project will explain to them how moisture forms in clouds and after the clouds become heavy, it rains. To make this project, we will use Ball Jars, fill them with water (represents atmosphere) and put shaving cream on the top (represents a cloud). Then, put a few drops of blue food dye (represents rain) on the shaving cream and watch it run through the cream. Our group will go into Glenside Elementary on a Friday afternoon to do this activity with the class.

Earthlings Strive for STEAM

Hi, we are the Tree Huggers. Our group members are Ashley Driscoll (Criminal Justice), Quinn Diaz (Marketing), Vinny DeLeo (Undeclared), and Caroline Jones (Elementary Education). We will be partnering with Glenside Elementary’s STEM/STEAM team to create activities for the students. We are looking forward to creating fun activities for students to help expand their knowledge.
