The Glenside Villagers have completed our flower bed project and are now much more knowledgeable on the concepts of air pollution.

Overall we were very proud and pleased with our final product. Having to move around 80 plus cement cinder blocks and wheel over about 14 wheelbarrows of dirt defiantly was not any easy task, however, by using the cement cinder blocks will ensure that this project is long lasting. Also, another group could come along later and paint the cement cinder blocks in order to add some design and character to it. It was really great to see how our project and the other glenside group’s project came together. Now, when you look at the shed you see a beautiful design painted on the shed with our flower bed accenting the shed by wrapping around the entire surface.

Air pollution was a topic that most people are familiar with, but when going into greater detail, we were able to learn many new things about air pollution we didn’t previously no. One of the main topics about air pollution that no one in our group was aware of was indoor air pollution. Indoor air pollution completely makes sense when you think about why painters cover their mouth and nose when painting, or why you air out a room by opening door and windows after painting or cleaning. Indoor air pollution can be caused by everyday activities.

We found this project to be very informational as well as a fun hands on activity. It was a great way to develop new knowledge while helping the local environment. We will definitely be going back to see it all complete with flowers blooming in the spring!

The Glenside Villagers enjoyed getting a chance to share everything we have learned about air pollution. All though everyone is familiar with the topic of air pollution, we enjoyed being able to share some of the depth about air pollution. A few teachers and students came up to our table interested in air pollution. We believe air pollution to be a serious and dangerous environmental hazard. We hope that the people we were able to talk to take measures to reduce air pollution. EVERY LITTLE BIT COUNTS!

Today, the Glenside Villagers stayed inside on this windy day and worked on our research project. We organized the paper determining what information we want to have in each paragraph as well as reading more in depth into our previous outline bullet points. Sentences are beginning to form and the paper is moving along with ease! Although it definitely wasn’t as much fun as going to the project site, this is a necessary part of the overall assignment that needs as much attention as the project itself.

Hey guys! Today the Glenside Villagers were able to accomplish a lot! Krissy, Matt, and I headed over to Home Depot to grab a couple cement cinder blocks before heading over to meet Sosa at Glenside Elementary School. We were able to speak with Melissa, the school nurse, to decide exactly the best way to do the flower beds around the shed. We concluded on a barrier approximately 2ft from the base of the shed. We are going to wrap around the entire shed making one giant flower bed. The cinder blocks will be doubled up to make the flower bed pretty deep. We also measured around the shed to determine how many cinder blocks we will need. We discovered we’ll need around 80 cinder blocks give or take. So far we have five on scene lol. Overall this was a very successful day in gathering vital information to begin this project.

Our group has confirmed we will be extending the shed with flower beds. These flower beds will be made out of cement and painted to reflect the Glenside community (:

As a team, we are very excited to start working to better Glenside environment! Sosa is an alumni from Glenside and is extremely excited to be able to go back and help his old school. We will be working with other groups in order to best complete the task of building and designing flower bins. Our group will be building and designing creative flower bins for grades 2nd and 3rd. We have chosen to research the topic of pollution in the city. This is a very common and severe problem that has been occurring for a long time. We hope when this research project is done, we will be able to have a better understanding of this issue, and be able to inform others as well.

Our first adventure to Glenside

We are the Glenside Villagers! As a team we will be working to better the environment at Glenside School. Each of our members provide valuable skills and resources in order to complete our tasks at hand. We will have several meetings throughout this process discussing the best ways to accomplish our goal. While working together, we will bring back the beautiful environment at Glenside School.

Kaylee Frapaul is a sophomore student currently majoring in marketing and minoring in psychology. Kaylee is our team’s liaison. She will help our team stay focused and organized during this project.

Sosa is a junior majoring in criminal justice and minoring in Spanish. He play soccer for the Penn state men’s soccer team. He’s an outgoing person always ready to work. Can’t wait to work with my team and hopefully make Glenside a learning environment for the kids.

Krisann Cruickshank is a Senior at Penn State Berks, Currently Majoring in Criminal Justice. She is hardworking, dedicated and committed to finishing anything she starts. She takes pride in punctuality and getting things done in a timely fashion. She’s ecstatic to work with the team in helping Glenside as well as helping to beautify their environment.

Matt Harper is a junior here, currently majoring in marketing management! He is the team leader and will help our team work at the most efficient rate, and keeping everyone connected and happy with what we are planning to do. So excited for the opportunity to work in a team with my friends, I know we will leave our mark on Glenside and they will never forget the Glenside Villagers!

Our meeting with Karen Houck was great! She is a very kind and intelligent woman, during our visit she gave us a tour of Glenside. We went to the bottom floor where the kindergarten students were having lunch, Mrs. Houck showed us a lot of past year projects done by students and they all turned out great! We are so excited for the opportunity to leave our mark on this school! Next we then headed up to the main floor where the first and second graders had their classes, she also showed us the gym and some more past year projects from Berks students. Lastly, we headed to the third floor which is where the rest of the older students had class. We actually ran into a past teacher that Sosa had when he attended Glenside back in 2008 with his fifth grade teacher Mrs. Hoffman. To finish our visit, Karen had us all come into a room where she then elaborated on possible projects that we could choose and they had plenty of amazing options! Then she led us to the exit and let us all scramble to our cars in the pouring rain! Overall it was a great visit and we are super excited to be able to have this opportunity to give back to Glenside!

Our team has decided to focus on the shed’s flower boxes for our project! We are very excited to begin hand making these flower boxes and decorate them to brighten up Glenside School!
