Out With the Bad

Last Wednesday, Matthew Barrett from Forbidden Drains helped out John Rost over at the Greenhouse removing invasive plants to leave room for our natural plants to grow more freely. A large patch of garden by the Jenssen Building was overrun with invasive plants, leaving little to not room for natural plants to grow as well as looking very scraggly. Matt removed all invasive plants from the garden patch, brought them behind Peiffer Farm where they will be used for another purpose such as composting. The whole process took a couple hours but will greatly help out the garden. A link below has a gallery of images from that day! Overall it was a great success!

Clear Skies Ahead

Today, our team began work on the Earth Day poster presentation where we will be talking about topics having to do with dumping into water sources such as nonpoint vs. point source pollution, cholera, and the importance of preserving our water sources. Tomorrow we will be taking part in EarthFest as our hours for the EACAP City of Reading Dumping Project was delayed due to weather issues. Hopefully, weather lets up and allows us to continue our work on the EACAP project and allows for a fun and eventful EarthFest!

No Dumping Allowed

Our team consists of four group members: Matthew Barrett, Steve Mack, Jenn Farnum, Tyler Kemp. We are a mix of sophomores, juniors, and seniors at the Penn State Berks campus with a mix of IST, SRA, & SPLED. We chose the storm drain project because our team wanted to work outside and the project as a whole seems rewarding.

Matthew Barrett: A Security & Risk Analysis junior student studying at Penn State Berks. Matt is 26 years old and will be working for Cisco Security’s CSIRS team this upcoming summer.

Steve Mack: A Security & Risk Analysis senior student studying at Penn State Berks. Steve is a 35 year old military veteran and enjoys the outdoors and environment conservation.

Jenn Farnum: A Information Sciences & Technology sophmore student studying at Penn State Berks. Jenn is 19 years old and enjoys traveling and will be transferring to University Park, Penn State’s main campus.

Tyler Kemp: A Special Education sophmore student studying at Penn State Berks. Tyler is 19 years old and enjoys golfing.

We will be working with the Reading Dept. of Public Works when the weather gets warmer to label storm drains and to help prevent dumping into the waterways around the city. Were looking forward to making a difference in the community.
