Research (Trail Swalers) 12/4/15

Our team is researching solar energy and how it is a better form of alternative in aspects to cost and efficiency compared to the types of resources that are used for energy such as oil. We are finding out a lot of interesting facts such as which countries have the most amount of solar energy production, how much is spent towards green energy and even how much waste is produced in the energy production of a given country. We are progressively working on the paper and have gotten a lot of research done as of now, and is just a matter of putting together all the research to complete our work.

Summary (Trail Swalers) 12/2/15

Our team had the great opportunity to do something positive for the environment and for those who enjoy running and biking. We were able to restore a trail’s path into something that will not cause a crash, fall, or sprained ankle when trying to enjoy the outdoors. We all enjoyed putting in the time and effort to make a difference for those who enjoy the Schuylkill Trail. As we worked we got a decent amount of footage of the trail and the work we have gotten done. Below is a link to the video that was created in dedication to the Trail Swalers:

Work On The Trail(Trail Swalers) 11/17/15

On November 17 our team proceeded with work on the Schuylkill River Trail. We were scheduled to meet around 12 at the trail, but the trail’s supervisor was not there with the tools so we took a look at the trail as we waited for him to arrive so we could continue our work. We saw several locations on the trail where there was erosion and that needed to be fixed for a satisfactory ride/run/walk on the trail. We received many compliments on our work as we covered several divots and covered dry muddy parts of the trail. We compacted the gravel that we put down with a pounder to ensure the dirt will stay firm and not be washed away. We wanted to make the trail look nicer than it did before we started working. Below is a video of the final suppression of the ground on the section that we repaved.

First Visit (Trail Swalers) 10/25/15

On October 25, 2015 our team visited the trail to get some work done. We were issued with the task of filling in various divots along the trail itself. The divots were caused by erosion and water run off. This causes a major issue for pedestrians that are running and biking on the trail. They could sprain an ankle or get their tires stuck in one of the divots and wipe out. We don’t want this to ever occur on any of the trails so we used gravel and packed the dirt down to fill in the various areas that were a major issue. As working we received many compliments and thank yous from bikers and runners on the trail for the work we were doing. At least the work is not going by unnoticed.

Trail Swalers First Meeting 9/25/15

We met with our supervisor who goes by the name of Bob. There is a problem on the Schuylkill Trail of erosion of the trail due to run-off water. We agreed to work on the trail to build swales along side of the trail to prevent erosion and destruction of the trail. Bob is going to provide us with the given materials that we require to complete our job on the trail. (We do not have a picture of Bob but here is the closest thing)

Team Intro (Trail Swalers) 9/25/15

We are various Penn State students majoring in Information Technology, engineering, and communication. Our names are Marc Beavens, Thomas Moyer, Dallan Yoh, and Peter Fortuna. We all love the outdoors and some of us used to hunt. Nature is a beautiful thing and more work should be put into protecting the environment. Picture coming soon!
