Wrapping Up – Books and Beyond (May 2, 2016)

The past few weeks have been busy for our Books and Beyond team. We were able to finally place our painted pots around the Glenside Garden and add the soil and seeds to them. Hopefully the seeds will grow into beautiful flowers for the kids grow and see. Also my group presented in the Gaige building with our poster “Native or Naw”. We invited students and passerby’s to play in our game that we developed. They had to guess if the pictures of the plants were an invasive species or native. It was very interesting to hear the students try to guess them. It has been wonderful working with Glenside and also seeing the other students put in huge amounts of effort and dedication to their EACAP projects. It is now time for the our team “Books and Beyond”, to turn a new page in our lives, and take our knowledge of the environment to places beyond this class.

Poster Creation Pt. 1 of 2 and Group Painting – Books and Beyond (April 12, 2016)

Today on Tuesday, April 12, our group began the process of making our poster for Earth Day next Week. We plan to have it all finished by Thursday, April 14 in order to be ready for Earth Day.

Last Thursday on April 7 we met at Kaylee Grinrod’s house to paint the pots for the elementary school. We spent about 2 hours painting around 16 pots. We look forward to begin planting inside the pots so the kids can watch them grow.

Painting Pots!Happily Working in Class

Spending time at Glenside

These past few weeks we have been researching and gathering data for our project. Finally, on Sunday April 3rd from 2pm-4pm we were able to spend time at Glenside Elementary School. My entire group was able to attend and we took a gander at the garden we would be working in. We know where we want to plant our flowers in the garden now. Once we finished surveying the garden we went to A.C. Moore and purchased pots for each classroom and for the Principal and Vice Principal. On Thursday, April 7, we will be painting the pots for the school. As soon as we accomplish this we will purchase flowers, seeds, and soil and start planting.

Glenside Project Ideas

On Tuesday, March 1st Books and Beyond met with the professor to give her a progress update and to finalize our project decision. We have decided to proceed with the garden project. We plan to focus on planting native flowers to attract local and friendly insects. Our main focus will be attracting butterflies and hopefully hummingbirds. We also plant have the graduation class to choose a flower and leave it there as their legacy.

Glenside Assistant Principal Meeting

On Thursday, February 25th at 3:15, Ryan Pratzner and Brittney Geisinger met with Ass. Principal Houck. She showed us the school and explained the different topics available to us. As of right now my group is leaning towards the garden cleanup and care taking. Since we just received our EACAP project and information we are a bit behind in research. Luckily now that we know what we are doing and we are more confident in the direction we want to take our project.

Glenside Elementary School Update

After a long awaited time Glenside has contacted our Books and Beyond EACAP group and confirmed our partnership for this project. Our group is very excited to begin working with Glenside. Now we can begin brainstorming ideas for our environmental issue. Since we have just begun brainstorming we do not have too many ideas yet. Our top ideas as of right now are littering and recycling. We plan to meet with the representative of Glenside very soon to discuss more specifics regarding this project. We will also begin meeting outside of class in order to get a head start on the project.

This has been an update by Ryan Pratzner, member of Books and Beyond. Have a lovely day.
