We have come to the point in our semester where we are finishing up classes which means our service learning has come to an end as well. Through out our time spent at Glenside elementary school we did a lot of gardening, weeding, raking, and overall cleaning of the campus. Before we got to the school there was many planters around campus filled with dead plants, old soil, and some even had trash in them, but we did our best to restore some beauty, as much as we could for the cold months ahead of us. We uprooted all the dead plants around campus and mixed the dry soil at the top with the wet soil in the bottom, we also made sure to pick up as many leaves as we could but by the time we were done there was already new leaves falling. Despite the cold weather and strong winds we enjoyed the project overall because it gave us a stress relief and allowed s to be in nature and get some well needed fresh air. All though we did enjoy the project we also learned a lot from what we saw, we noticed how strong of an impact the climate and weather has on the world around us, even though we were there for a short time a lot of things changed. In the beginning there was few leaves on the ground and the soil was old but still soft, by the end of our time there all the trees were bare and the whole campus is covered in leaves also the soil began to freeze and turn rock solid plus there was frost added on the ground some days as well. We were able to see all the insects that were still living in these plants as well despite the weather and conditions, our group was actually surprised by how man live insects we saw as we uprooted the old plants. We gained a new respect for gardening and saw how very easy tasks made such a drastic change in the appearance of a place. Our message for others is to get outside get some from fresh air and if you need a stress relief try gardening, our group got a great appreciation for it and saw the benefits in how it helped take our mind off things and relieved stress as well. As we put away our gardening gloves for the rest of the season we want to thank you guys for watching our journey and seeing how we changed the appearance of Glenside. We hope you enjoyed the before and after pictures as much as we did. Below we’ve attached a link to some pictures as well just in case you didn’t see throughout our time. Don’t forget when spring comes around to pull out your gardening gloves and go enjoy nature! 🙂
