Newsletter Update: Planning Stages
On Friday September 23, 2016 at around 10:45, the EACAP groups working on the newsletter met to discuss the project. The meeting was led by Dr. Kazempour, who described the newsletter as a vehicle for reaching the study body on the topic of sustainability. Among the topics, the groups discussed spotlighting members from the Penn State Berks Sustainability Team, faculty and staff making efforts toward greater environmental awareness, writing articles gauging student interest in recycling, looking at issues in the community, and initiatives taken up by departments around campus. The newsletter will be a collaborative effort between the three teams, Thrive and Survive. Length and serial publication dates will be discussed at a later meeting.
Final Reflection and Presentation ( Squad) on December 11,2015
Reading Beautification Inc. EACAP – Squad
On Friday, December 11th our team presented our environmental issue on Water Pollution and our service learning project with Reading Beautification Inc. During our presentation we discussed the causes & effects of water pollution. We found that key water sources are being overdrawn or tainted with pollution and also that dirty water is the world’s biggest health risk. We also presented our finding about (RBI) and the chance we got through working with (RBI) because We all share a common interest in helping out the environment and making it look like a better place to live in. We thought that the Reading Beautification Inc. would be a good project to work on because it would help improve an the environment near us.We were interesting in make an environmental look better because we all had shared an experiences at some point of our live’s where we saw a damage environment that needed cleaning and we saw this as a chance to better it . So we dedicated some of out time to cleaning along Trail called Union Canal Trail. We as a team Ultimately felt that this was a good experience and help open up our eyes to what is going on in the world as far as environment issues.
Angstadt Trail
We paved our section with gravel that were eroded, we stomped the gravel down and raked the eroded spots to make it look natural to the trail. Tracey came up with an idea to get a tarp that is biodegradable and embedded it in the ground near the fence and covered it with dirt so that the rainwater can runoff to the fence away from the trail. The tarp can last for 100 years and not deteriorate.

As our semester draws to a close so does our service-learning project. We have presented to our class as well as spent a day presenting to our fellow students in Gaige. It was great hanging out around campus and talking to the people that stopped by and were interested in our work. We hope that what we did this semester goes forth into our community and helps to better our environment.
Our finished brochure also came out of this project and is awesome if we do say so ourselves! Please check it out and consider volunteering on the trail!
Community Awareness Presentation
On December 4th, 2015 we were able to present our EACAP project to the public in the Gaige building. We set up a tri-fold poster board with documentation and media of the project we did at the Schuylkill River Trail and our environmental topic on Solar Energy. We had a great time talking with people who noticed our project, and even Bob, our project manager at the trail came out to take a look.

Final Presentation and Reflection (Green Squad) December 14, 2015
On Friday, December 11th our team presented on our topic of polar bears and our project at Glenside Elementary. During our presentation, we talked about the polar bear species and how they are being affected by climate change. We found that 2/3 of the polar bear population will be gone by 2050 and their habitat will most likely disappear in the next 100 years. We also discussed our EACAP project which consisted of us painting at Glenside Elementary which is located in Reading. We talked about the step by step process our team had to go through to get the finished product. We are very happy we were able to help Glenside and we want to thank Ms. Houck for working with us on it.
Attached below is our in class presentation.
Community Awareness Event -12/4/15
On December 4th, we presented our information about our issue and research on our maps. The day went great and we interacted and engaged with others, teaching them about our topics. It was good to get the opportunity to inform people about the problem of Water Pollution. We also finished up our information on our maps and began to wrap up our reports for a final draft. The picture is our board of the information that we presented on this day.
