Finished Mural Photos (Green Team) December 6, 2015

Below are some photos of our team and the other team’s finished poles. The photo on top shows the winter side of all the trees, and the one on the bottom shows the summer side. We are very happy with how the poles turned out. The faculty at Glenside was very pleased as well. They really appreciated the work that we did, and we are very excited for the students to see the trees.

Final Presentation (Team CEA) 12/7/15

Here is our team’s final presentation that we made! Team CEA Environmental Waste Presentation

We want to thank everyone for tuning into our progress throughout the semester. We are so happy we were able to help transform Glenside’s cafeteria into a bright and fun place for the children to eat their lunch and also be able to see some of the different Pennsylvania trees. It was awesome to see how grateful and excited the Glenside staff was when they saw the murals. Our team is so grateful we got to have this experience to not only help Glenside, but to also learn more about the impact of waste and how we can try to prevent further harm to our environment. Although our project is done, the overall job is not and our group will continue to spread more awareness to this issue.

(Storm Callers) Final Presentation: 12/7

Storm_Callers-Presentation

Our final presentation has been made, and we are very proud of the research and work with Glenside to help the environment and spread the word about the chemicals going into it. So many people think pesticides are a problem only found on farms, but this is far from the truth. They are everywhere, and ironic twist is that they are harming the very plants we are attempting to protect by using the pesticides. What we really need are biological solutions that due not use toxic chemicals, such as using specific fungi or ant colonies to kill the bugs eating away at our produce. These solutions, and more information about our research and organization work, can be found in our presentation presented here. We hope the information is useful for anyone viewing it, and that you take a moment to think the next time you go shopping for insecticide.

(Storm Callers) Gaige presentations: 12/4

20151204_133739

This was our main event presentation day when all EACAP teams were present to show our research and organization work. Our team was present from 12pm-2pm, showing any passerby what we did with Glenside and our research on the adverse effects of pesticides. We had a good turnout of people that seemed interested in our topic, not realizing that pesticides are in a lot more things than we realize. While it is hard to tell people that things they thought were safe actually aren’t, it’s better than letting them keep living in ignorance. If people don’t know what is wrong, then the problem can never be solved, just as a storm will never end until the imbalance is fixed. We felt very proud of ourselves towards the information we were providing, and can only hope more people will spread the information and change can occur from the knowledge that we initiated.

(Storm Callers) Math/Science Fest: 11/19

20151119_172428

The Second Festival we participated in was the Math/Science Fest. We were instructed to find an activity relating to the environment and incorporate a form of math or science learning adaptation to it. In this case, we created a game using ‘lily pads’ and numbers. The nature of the game was that the child was the frog trying to get to the other side of the river, but there were certain lily pads that were not safe to cross. It was their job to find the proper lily pad numbers that would lead to the correct solution at the end. We had three different levels of math: Simple addition, addition and subtraction, and multiplication. The kids found this game to be incredibly engaging and would stay, wanting to try another problem or go to the next level. We were very happy with the turnout and reaction from the kids, feeling we made a positive impact on their desire to learn more about how math is everywhere.

Finishing The Poles (Team CEA) 12/6/2015

On Sunday, Christine, Emily, and Alysia went to Glenside to finish the remaining poles. We were there for 3 hours to make sure all of the poles were finished. The GreenTeam also came to Glenside to help us since we had a lot more to do. If the GreenTeam was not there, we would not have been able to complete the rest of the project. We have now completed our hours for Glenside and look forward to hearing what the kids from Glenside think about the project.

Research (Trail Swalers) 12/4/15

Our team is researching solar energy and how it is a better form of alternative in aspects to cost and efficiency compared to the types of resources that are used for energy such as oil. We are finding out a lot of interesting facts such as which countries have the most amount of solar energy production, how much is spent towards green energy and even how much waste is produced in the energy production of a given country. We are progressively working on the paper and have gotten a lot of research done as of now, and is just a matter of putting together all the research to complete our work.

Summary (Trail Swalers) 12/2/15

Our team had the great opportunity to do something positive for the environment and for those who enjoy running and biking. We were able to restore a trail’s path into something that will not cause a crash, fall, or sprained ankle when trying to enjoy the outdoors. We all enjoyed putting in the time and effort to make a difference for those who enjoy the Schuylkill Trail. As we worked we got a decent amount of footage of the trail and the work we have gotten done. Below is a link to the video that was created in dedication to the Trail Swalers:
