Yesterday afternoon our group had a table out in the Gaige building on campus and were able to share our research on the impact of environmental waste with the community. We also had the chance to talk with some of the students and others who stopped by and tell them about the mural work we did with Glenside Elementary School. We are so glad we got the chance to talk with everyone who came over to our table. Many were shocked to find out that food waste is one of the biggest source of problems with landfills as it can release methane gas. They were also shocked to see just how many landfills Pennsylvania’s counties have and that over 60% is sent over from other states into Pennsylvania. In Berks County alone, there are 4 landfills and the county continues to take in trash from other counties in Pennsylvania!

Gaige Presentation
Today was our presentation in Gaige about the Schuylkill River Trail that we worked on. As a group we discussed where the trail was located, what contributions we made to the trail and also showed a picture slide of the work we did. We learned as a “team” to work together and to count on one another as a team. The environment a is small planet when one thing is destroyed it starts a chain reaction that can harm the echo system. The main lesson of our EACAP experience is that it is our obligation as human beings to take care of the earth.

Finished Tree Painting Mural (Green Team) Dec. 2, 2015
All members of Green Team participated in finishing the tree paintings. We had a lot of fun painting the trees and making them look as realistic as possible for all four seasons. While having fun we accomplished our goal of painting four trees through the different seasons.
The Impact of Solid Waste & Possible Solutions (Team CEA) 12/1/15
As our team has continued our research on environmental waste, we have found some very concerning issues that occur as a result of the waste we dump into landfills. We found out that when different types of waste are continually dumped into landfills, the trash releases greenhouse gases into the air. One of those gases, being methane, which is even more harmful to the environment than Carbon Dioxide. Although this information feels extremely concerning, there is still hope! There are steps everyone can take to help prevent further harm to our environment. One of these steps include, (as obvious as it may sound) simply reducing the amount of trash we are throwing away and in general trying to use less. We can also continue to recycle as much material as possible and reuse items whenever we can. While researching we found that there are actually companies out there that have the mission of reducing other large scale companies’ waste! This is a great step in the right direction to protecting our environment!

Our SRT findings by RACC (Team PJ2) November 30, 2015
On November 13th, George, Kevin, Jen, Jesse, and Payton went to the Schuylkill River Trail. Our findings at this location was very different than what we found at the last location. This time we went to the part of the trail that was located behind RACC. This trail was filled with graffiti, trash, glass bottles, and wasn’t well maintained. Walking along the trail, we also discovered that groups of homeless people live on these trails. We saw about ten tents of homeless people, as well as other people living along the actual river. After our discoveries, we now have a better understanding of why many people feel discouraged/scared to come to this part of the trail.
Mural Painting Continued (Green Team), November 23, 2015 and November 24, 2015
Over Thanksgiving break, half of the Green Team was able to go to Glenside and continue to paint our murals. We went on Monday November 23rd and Tuesday November 24th. We spent a total of 10 hours painting our trees on the poles in the cafeteria. As we were working, multiple faculty members walked by and complimented us on our work and how much they appreciated us doing this project for the school. Painting the trees was very relaxing and is an enjoyable project. We will be coming back to the school once break is over to finish all of the trees. Pictured below are our finished paintings of a blue spruce tree in the winter, a plum tree in the spring, the plum tree in the fall, and the plum tree in the winter.
