Thrive to Survive Reflects

This semester has been a great semester for our team and our project turned out very well! We loved working together and broadening our horizons on these very important subjects. Many important lessons have been learned on waste and about the garbage patch and will effect our lives forever. Every time I drink a bottle of something from now on, I am going to assure it returns to a place that will break it down effectively and safely. This project really helped us with our teamwork and communication skills as it required a lot of outside of classroom work and effort. This semester has been very valuable to our whole team and we have all bonded in a great way!

That’s a Wrap!

Being in this course has been a wonderful experience. I learned so much useful and relevant information while still having fun. The most important thing that I learned is that the issue starts with us and so does the solution. The environmental issues that we experience can be tackled little by little. When I say this I mean start solving the issue by changing your bad habits. Recycle more and waste less. Educated yourself about what is going on and how you can help stop it. All of my classmates did a wonderful job getting people involved and informed; I hope you all are inspired to make some changes. I have attached a presentation about water pollution. Enjoy!

Final Post

I all comes to an end. The Green To Extreme team finished up and presented Wednesday November 30th. We had a great experience with the project and look forward to the future and what it brings. Here is our presentation slides and some of our pictures on the service we did at Glenside Elementary. We put the birdhouses in the glenside garden and they look great. Some of our other birdhouses are being kept for the spring. Our research paper is finished and focused on food waste. Remember to eat what you can and put only what you can eat on your plate. Think, Save, Reduce.

Culiminating Thoughts on EACAP Project

image

This project ended up being a huge success for myself, Derek, and Ben. We had expressed uncertainties with how to go about what our goal was (and sometimes did not even know what we were aiming for), but we were able to get it together and create a successful sustainability website that will eventually have its content copied to the official Penn State Berks Sustainability website. I think this will end up being very successful in terms of getting people aware because there are a lot of people out there that care about creating a better environment in which to live, and I would venture to guess that people would view information from a world-renowned university’s web page more than just a personal web page like the one we created, however we have seen the site pick up some views over the course of doing the project.

For now, the web page can be seen HERE. (https://eacapenvironmentalist.wordpress.com/). Eventually, it will be linked on the Penn State Berks website and much more accessible and much easier to locate for the average person who is looking up sustainability topics.

Also successful was our research on deforestation. We were able to tie that in with our service project of creating the web page quite well, and the great amount of information we were able to get on the topic will hopefully help everyone who stopped by our poster and everyone who saw the presentation in class.

Our poster presentation and our slide show presentation were both very successful in terms of relaying the large amounts of information we gathered to the public. In total, 11 people stopped by our poster, and over 20 students were in attendance at our slide show presentation. If every person shared our website (or eventually the PSU Berks Sustainability web site) with someone, and they shared it with someone, the site should accumulate hundreds or even thousands of views, at which point people would likely be acting on the issues at hand.

This project was worth the time and effort we put into it. We got out of it what we put into it, and based on what we got out of it, all three of us can tell that the great amount of effort we put into it has paid off.

Team Gaia’s Final Post

We are finally here with our final post and reflection on our progress as Team Gaia. We definitely learned a lot working on this topic and learned that if we want a bright and healthy future for the next generations we NEED to take action and start finding healthy ways to co exist on earth as far as waste goes. Seeing how we currently have 5 trillion plastic waste in the ocean was eye opening and shows how its OUR responsibility to recycle and reuse whatever we have or at least change our lifestyle waste to not produce so much pollution. We had fun learning everything we did and despite a few bumps in the road we came together and had an awesome presentation. We especially enjoyed making the Recycling video skit which will be posted on the Penn State Berks site once its all finished. Ultimately we can all do a little something to help make the environment and our oceans healthier. Team Gaia out!

Out with a Bang

As our final post, we are reflecting on our project throughout the semester. We enjoyed working together and feel we made a difference in how people view food waste and recycling. We wanted to use to media as our major way of connecting to students and faculty on campus. The survey worked well because it allowed us to see how many students take advantage of the trash and recycling services we have on campus. It contributed to our service as well as our research. We designed a petition in order to “make something happen.” Not only did we want to advocate for recycling, but we wanted to contribute to the progress. We have heard from multiple sports teams that there are not enough recycling bins around campus and at sports’ complexes. This petition will hopefully change that. We met weekly in the library to work on our project throughout the semester and this was a big contributing factor to our success as a team.

We Are and Will Always Be… THE GREEN MEDIA

Final thoughts

As our EACAP project comes to an end, this does not mean that our environmental awareness should end as well. As a group, we completed a lot but individually I think we each reflected heavily on how we are harming our environment. This EACAP project revolved around water contamination and improving a school’s garden by adding a little more color to it. Not only did we improve our environment, we informed others on how to do so. I believe after this class, I will be more conscious about my surroundings and how my every day routine affects it. Here’s to a greener planet from MLR.

Reflection on our project!

For our group project, we decided to work on the topic of water pollution. Our group decided that water pollution was a very important topic that should be talked about so more people are aware of it and will do something to help prevent it. From this research we were able to learn and understand a multitude of things about water pollution that we previously were unaware of. Such as the history of water pollution, the fight against it, causes, effects, and ways to prevent it. Our message to others is to be more mindful of what you discard into the trash and drains. We should all also learn the ways of how our waste is treated so that we are able to find different ways to dispose of it that are more beneficial to the environment.
