Final Post for Service Action

Our group, Nature Lover (Jane, Skylar, Abby, and Riya) had chose to work with Glenside Elementary school for our service project. We decided to paint the ceiling tiles for kids with the science curriculum that each grade is learning. Those ceiling tiles will be placed above of their cafeteria, so they can all see them during the time when they are having lunch. These are our topic that we were assigned to do:

  • Kindergarten: Weather, plants, animals
  • First grade: Seasonal Patterns
  • Second grade: Earth’s surface
  • Third grade: Patterns of Motion
  • Fourth grade: Earth’s land forms and features
  • Fifth grade: Structure of matter.

We used the all kinds of brushes and colored paint for this project. First we made sketches for each of the topic. After that, we just started to paint on the ceiling tiles. Abby painted the structure of matter for third grade and the patterns of motion for fifth grade. Jane painted the Earth’s land form and feature for fourth graders. Riya did the weather, and Sky did the seasonal patterns. They took a lot longer than we thought to finish one ceiling tile. They all took each of us almost 4-5 hours to finish each of the ceiling tile, which means overall they took us more than 10 hours to finish all of them. However, we actually enjoyed painting them during the process of doing it. Whenever we thought about how the kids are going to look at them in the future for better education on this topic, we can’t be happier and willing to paint it well for them. Since we all love kids. After we finished painting, we were all so proud of ourselves and each other because we first thought it was kind of hard to finish all of them. Overall, we were all happy of being in this group and work with the elementary school. We get to know more about each other throughout the project. At the end, we all became good friends that will hangout sometimes during the lunch. We definitely think it is something worth it to do in BISC3! Therefore, we are all happy to have this opportunity and chance to try educate others and also gain more knowledge on environmental science.

These are some of our final painting:

Community Awareness Event

On Wednesday November 29th, The Nature Lovers presented our poster and project to fellow students and staff in Gaige. We all enjoyed informing staff about Ocean pollution and what we chose as our service. It was also great to see what topics other groups did and to see their projects come to life. Over all it was a wonderful day!

Ceiling tile and Report Progress

After meeting on Wednesday the 15th, the nature lovers continued working on the Research Report. Our topic is ocean pollution. We were able to get the majority of it done but decided to put the final touches together on our in class work day on Friday the 17th. Over Thanksgiving break we are all going to work on our tiles.

Ceiling tile progress

After another meeting day on October 30th the Nature Lovers are almost done with our sketches for the ceiling tiles that will go in each classroom to help the kids visualize the “sciency” and environmental things they are learning about! After we are done with the sketches we will start to pain them onto the tiles so stay tuned for more updates and pictures of what’s to come!

Get To Know The Nature Lovers

We are the Nature Lovers! I am Riya Patel and I am a sophomore at Berks. I was born and raised in Collegeville, PA and I am a business major. I have always liked learning about the environment and new species or animals, ever since I was younger and I hope one day I can learn more and give back to our environment. Jane Hsieh is another member of our group and she is also a sophomore. She was born and grew up in Taiwan. She is majoring in business also. She likes to learn about environmental science since she cares about the planet that we live on! Abby Kotchi is another member of our group and she is also a sophomore. Her major is film and video, she’s from Levittown, PA and she loves the environment. The last member of our group is Skylar Sabo and she is currently a sophomore at Berks, with hopes of going up to main campus next year to pursue a career in Real Estate. She grew up in Boyertown, PA, where she also graduated from. She is a lover of all animals so she loves learning about what’s going on in the environment and what she can do to help. We think we would work well together because we get along great, we know that we all need to work and collaborate together on this project and we are all very creative! We met with Glenside Elementary and decided to paint some ceiling tiles for the science classes for each grade level. Each grade level learns different scientific concepts so we though it would be a good idea to show those concepts to the kids with a visual for them to learn better and learn more about each science topic for that grade. We plan to work after hours of the school so we can go into the classrooms and paint the tiles for the science classes in each grade.
