Click here to view our EACAP PowerPoint Presentation

Hello all! My team and I presented in class on Tuesday. If you were there, thanks for coming and hearing about our work! If not, we’ve taken the liberty to attach a copy of our powerpoint to this post. That way, you can see how all of our research and community service came together. Doing this project really had a huge impact on all of us. We are now much more aware of our environment and what we can do to help. Hopefully you guys gained more knowledge and awareness as well. We’re so glad that we could contribute to improving our environment and we’ll continue to do so in the future. Thanks for going on this journey with us! Let’s make this Earth a better place!

Earth Day -Best Day Squad (4/22/16)

Today was a huge success! For those of you who don’t know, Penn State Berks invited 5th graders from the Glenside Elementary School to our campus today. The main goal was to educate the students on the importance of being environmentally aware. First, we set up different stations where the kids could work on activities related to the environment. Some of these stations included: building bird feeders, creating a globe out of recycled paper, painting pots for plants, and many more. My group helped out with the group that had the amazing idea of painting pots. They actually were able to get the pots and soil donated to us from Home Depot, so a big shout out to them! The kids were incredibly thrilled that they would be able to get their hands dirty and create a masterpiece of their very own, and the pots turned out beautiful. After these activities, the kids were asked to paint the environment on a canvas. A lot of the kids ended up painting the sun, grass, trees, clouds, the sky, and plants. However, a lot of them forgot to add in roads, buildings, humans, and animals. So, we educated them about the definition of the environment and that it is literally everything around you. Following the canvas painting, the kids brought poems they wrote and read them to each other. They were about the environment and mentioned things like water and protecting the Earth. After the fun activities, it was time for lunch. We headed to the pavilion and enjoyed a nice meal. But, after the meal, the kids were asked to separate their trash items and see what could be recycled. We ended up recycling almost everything that was used! Following lunch was the tour. We took the kids to the garden and greenhouse area across the street. There, they learned about bees, bats, plants, and how the sun can be used for energy. After the tour, we went back to the Perkins Student Center building and had a raffle. A few kids won some environmental prizes. Then, my team handed out our brochures on everyday things that are harmful to the environment and what you can do to help. Sadly, after that it was time for them to leave. However, Earth Day turned out to be a major success. It was a great day filled with fun and education that the kids will never forget. If you want to see pictures and videos from the event, we are having a presentation on Tuesday, April 26, 2016, at 1:40PM in room 246 Gaige building on Berks Campus. All are welcome, and we hope to see you there! squadend

Posters/Earth Day- Best Day Squad (4/21/16)

Hello all! This is Natalie reporting back after our poster presentations from Tuesday. We all sat in the Gaige building lobby and set up our poster board which is pictured below. It was a lot of hard work, but it came together really well! We had the opportunity to talk to people passing by about our work, and it was great just to get the awareness out there. It was also a lot fun seeing the other teams’ projects. Everyone has worked so hard and come up with some amazing ideas. Also, a lot of the community service projects are outstanding. We got into some great discussion with the Bee Team, and I highly recommend checking out their project if you haven’t. Also, tomorrow is Earth Day! It’s gonna be an amazing day filled with tons of environmental activities, and you’ll see us out and about leading activities. We’ve also made some really neat brochures that will tell you all about everyday objects that harm the environment and some alternatives for a better world. So, stop by and pick one up! We’ll see you there!bisci poster

Brochures! (Best Day Squad preps for Earth Day) 4/13/16

Hello everyone! We just wanted to give you an update today about more of our plans for Earth Day. JJ and I (Natalie) have decided to create an informational brochure for everyone to take on Earth Day. This brochure is going to focus on objects that are a part of your everyday life that harm the environment. We’ll list the objects and propose some solutions. Stop by our table during the Earth Day festivities in order to get a brochure and see the small steps you can take to help the environment!

Today, our team spent our class time working on our research report. We found information regarding the history, threats, and solutions in regards to the protection of wildlife and land in Pennsylvania. In the photo, we were looking over the research we obtained, and planning how we’re going to put all the pieces together. We’ll be putting the highlights of what we found onto our poster for next week. Head over to Gaige building on Tuesday, April 19th to see our poster!

Best Day Squad Updates- 4/5/16

Hello world! This has been a bit of a rough journey so far. However, we have finalized that we will be participating in PSU Berks’ Earth Day activities. Students from Glenside Elementary School will be coming to us, and they’ll be able to see our school and all of the environmental elements it holds. We’re planning to put together some fun and educational activities for the kids. We’ll be taking them on tours of our greenhouse and various gardens. Also, we’ll be doing a craft where the kids will be able to paint their own pots. They’ll then get soil and seeds and have a plant of their very own! Our team has also been working to finalize our research project. We’ll be focusing on the protection of parks and wildlife in Pennsylvania. So, stay tuned for results from Earth Day, and get ready to hear about what you can do to protect our environment!

Best Day Squad Visits Glenside 2/25/16

Yesterday, February 25, JJ and I (Natalie) finally got to visit Glenside Elementary School. We had a great time talking to Ms. Houck and touring the school. We were able to see the many projects that prior PSU Berks students have participated in. It’s a very nice school that just needs a little love. It seems like the biggest hurdle will be financing. The school doesn’t have much of a budget and we’re going to have to come up with fundraising ideas for them. JJ and I also had the opportunity to see the garden. It’s a nice area with a lot of potential. Ms. Houck hopes that someday her students will be able to have class outside in the garden. It’s our job to spruce it up and create enough seating for 32 students. I think we have some great teams working at Glenside and we’re up to the challenge!

Best Day Squad

Our team consists of Natalie Reigner, Brittany Convry, JJ Lowery, and Haley Rice. On February 4, 2016 we completed the EACAP profile for our team and submitted the assignment in the Angel Dropbox. We hope to be involved in the Glenside Elementary School Garden. Each of us had experience working hands-on outdoors and are aware of where Glenside is located. We communicate often and feel with our strengths we have what it takes to create a successful project.
