Today was a huge success! For those of you who don’t know, Penn State Berks invited 5th graders from the Glenside Elementary School to our campus today. The main goal was to educate the students on the importance of being environmentally aware. First, we set up different stations where the kids could work on activities related to the environment. Some of these stations included: building bird feeders, creating a globe out of recycled paper, painting pots for plants, and many more. My group helped out with the group that had the amazing idea of painting pots. They actually were able to get the pots and soil donated to us from Home Depot, so a big shout out to them! The kids were incredibly thrilled that they would be able to get their hands dirty and create a masterpiece of their very own, and the pots turned out beautiful. After these activities, the kids were asked to paint the environment on a canvas. A lot of the kids ended up painting the sun, grass, trees, clouds, the sky, and plants. However, a lot of them forgot to add in roads, buildings, humans, and animals. So, we educated them about the definition of the environment and that it is literally everything around you. Following the canvas painting, the kids brought poems they wrote and read them to each other. They were about the environment and mentioned things like water and protecting the Earth. After the fun activities, it was time for lunch. We headed to the pavilion and enjoyed a nice meal. But, after the meal, the kids were asked to separate their trash items and see what could be recycled. We ended up recycling almost everything that was used! Following lunch was the tour. We took the kids to the garden and greenhouse area across the street. There, they learned about bees, bats, plants, and how the sun can be used for energy. After the tour, we went back to the Perkins Student Center building and had a raffle. A few kids won some environmental prizes. Then, my team handed out our brochures on everyday things that are harmful to the environment and what you can do to help. Sadly, after that it was time for them to leave. However, Earth Day turned out to be a major success. It was a great day filled with fun and education that the kids will never forget. If you want to see pictures and videos from the event, we are having a presentation on Tuesday, April 26, 2016, at 1:40PM in room 246 Gaige building on Berks Campus. All are welcome, and we hope to see you there!

Posters/Earth Day- Best Day Squad (4/21/16)
Hello all! This is Natalie reporting back after our poster presentations from Tuesday. We all sat in the Gaige building lobby and set up our poster board which is pictured below. It was a lot of hard work, but it came together really well! We had the opportunity to talk to people passing by about our work, and it was great just to get the awareness out there. It was also a lot fun seeing the other teams’ projects. Everyone has worked so hard and come up with some amazing ideas. Also, a lot of the community service projects are outstanding. We got into some great discussion with the Bee Team, and I highly recommend checking out their project if you haven’t. Also, tomorrow is Earth Day! It’s gonna be an amazing day filled with tons of environmental activities, and you’ll see us out and about leading activities. We’ve also made some really neat brochures that will tell you all about everyday objects that harm the environment and some alternatives for a better world. So, stop by and pick one up! We’ll see you there!
Environmental Club (Flower Power) 4/21/16
Yesterday was the Environmental Club at Glenside Elementary. During the club the kids were weeding and spreading mulch in the garden. They also made a craft where they planted sunflowers and glass in cups. We were able to work with children during this craft and help spread mulch around the garden. This was a wonderful experience and Flower Power is looking forward to working with the club again!

The Rain Dancers – Earth Day ( April 20, 2016)
The Rain Dancers- Water Shortage Facts (April 20, 2016)
Water shortage is a big problem that we are facing today. Water shortage is the lack of sufficient available water resources needed to meet water needs within a specific region. Water has grown at more than twice the rate of population increase in the last century. It is estimated that by 2025 that 1.8 billion people will live in areas plagued by water scarcity with 2/3’s of the world’s population living in water-stressed regions as a result of use, growth, and climate change. if we don’t do something soon, we won’t be able to survive on Earth anymore
Here are some facts to think about:
1.) Only about 1% of the Earth’s water is available to drink.
2.) The average American uses about 140-170 gallons of water per day.
3.) It takes about 3.3 acre-feet of water to grow enough food for an average family for a year.
The Rain Dancers-Brochure (April 20, 2016)
This is the brochure that we created to hand out to others to give them an idea of what rain barrels are and how they can help with the water shortage problem we are facing today.
Final project outcome (Huanjing) Apr 20, 2016
Yesterday was our public awareness day where we set up a display in Gaige. We finished both of our rain barrels and as a group we are proud with how they came out. We did a combine of fifteen hours of painting of a month span. We are excited to auction these off and see how much money is raised for the scholarship that goes with them; also we hope that they people that buy them enjoy what we created.
Earth Day (Team TBT), 4-19-16
Hi everyone!
Yesterday we had a great time showing off out poster for our project. We had pictures of our work at the garden, information about pesticides and fertilizers, and also information about what our plants will attract to the garden. We had a few people stop and it was great being able to share our hard work with them.
Team Frogger- 4/19/2016- EARTH DAY
TODAY WAS EARTH DAY (kinda). During our class period we had the opportunity to present our research to the people of the Gaige building. We got to display our information, speak about our volunteer work, and take a look at our classmate’s research as well. It was interesting to see the wide array of topics that our classmates chose, and I loved to see all the beautiful posters.
