Final Reflection

As the semester comes to a close, we are all extremely grateful for the opportunity to volunteer with the City of Reading Greenhouse.  Not only was it an amazing feeling to make a difference in our community, but we loved being able to get our hands dirty and learn a few new things along the way.  Between planting flowers, mixing super soil, repotting trees, and finding community members who are interested in the Greenhouse and what they do, our time spent here was so valuable to us.  We had so much fun and met many interesting and passionate characters along the way.  We highly recommend that anyone who is interested in helping their community volunteer at the City of Reading greenhouse, or even donate or spread awareness about the amazing things that are taking place here.  Reach out to the City of Reading Greenhouse to learn more about them and their love for the planet!

Hard Work Pays Off

The day after Earth Day, we (Sara, Caitlin, and McKenna) went back to the Greenhouse to help out some more.  While we were there, we planted more flowers in City Park and even planted some in front of the Dove statue that is located in the center of the park.  The finished product looked bright and beautiful, and it didn’t even look like the same park!  After that we mixed up more super soil and repotted a lot of trees.  At the end of our time there, we were told that the work we had done that day wouldn’t have been possible without us.  It was extremely rewarding to know that we were making such a difference to the Greenhouse and that our hard work was so valuable to them!

“Bee” Educated!

We also had the opportunity to present the poster we made for our work at the Greenhouse as well as the research project we did on Honey Bees and Colony Collapse Disorder!  It was such a great experience to be able to show off all our hard work to the people walking around the Gaige lobby.  While there were not as many people as we were hoping for, we were able to talk to a few people and share with them what we learned.  We showed them pictures of the greenhouse that we had set up on a laptop in front of our poster and talk about the things that we did there.  We also informed people on what CDD actually is, what causes it, and what we can to do help Honey Bees.  It was awesome being able to educate members of our school about this issue and teach them things that they had never learned before.

Getting our Hands Dirty on Earth Day

In honor of Earth Day, Racheal and McKenna were able to get a lot of work done!  There was a community service project aimed at involving the youth in Reading, so a basketball tournament was set up in which the fee for the tournament would be waived if the kids volunteered for an hour.  The work that they were doing was to mulch and plant flowers in City Park.  There was a great turn out and it was awesome to see people of all ages getting their hands dirty to help our planet!  Rachael and McKenna helped plant flowers in City Park as well as repot trees and get names and emails of the volunteers who were interested in receiving information about the City of Reading Greenhouse!

Super Soil

We (Caitlin, Sara, & Racheal) all had a great time going to the greenhouse! It is truly an amazing place! Today we learned the importance of mixing different types of soil together to create a super soil that will be able to sustain plant life better. We prepared new buckets to plant in with this new soil. We also removed the old dead ones where the soil mix was “not a good batch,” resulting in the plants dying. I did not realize how diverse the soil mix has to be in order to grow plant life successfully. We had compost dirt, saw dust dirt, chicken manure, and rabbit manure. The saw dust is what creates space in the soil to allow air and water to pass through easily. These are definitely tips that I will take home with me to help improve my own plant life at home.

Getting figgy with it

A team member from Flower Power 2 has met with Bryan Twyman at The City of Reading’s Greenhouse. She got a tour of the green house and discussed with Mr. Twyman about all the projects he is currently undertaking and how our team would be able to help. At this point our main focus will be working with the fruit trees. They currently have fig trees, pomegranate, bananas and pear trees. We are very excited about this project. Our next goal is to set up a day when all of our team members are able to go to the green house and get to work!

Planting New Beginnings

Hello!  We are team Flower Power 2 and we are working with the City of Reading CityPark Greenhouse Urban Agriculture.

Our team consists of McKenna Greener, Caitlin Morris, Sara Saraceni, and Rachel Dinger.  McKenna and Rachel are both fourth year Applied Psychology majors, Caitlin is a freshman, business marketing & management major, and Sara is a freshman, SRA major. We will also be working with Brian Twyman for this project.  We currently don’t have an appointment but will be scheduling one in the near future.  What we are looking forward to most about this project is being able to have a positive impact in our community.
