Team PACK Back at Nolde Forest!

Here’s another update from Team PACK! At the beginning of the month we went to Nolde again to help out. Unfortunately the weather was still not cooperating with us too well, so we did inside work again. Just like the last time we helped out Rachel with preparing their day of the dead event and turtle spotting with kids.

We also helped sort through broken pieces of equipment, so that kids would have fun with their experiments and art. We helped take this stuff out to the trash too!

Around lunchtime Rachel invited us over to another one of their buildings to observe some of the frogs! There was a window overlooking the pond and feeders, and they had a microphone so that you could hear the sounds from outside. The funny thing about this kind of frog is that they make more of a “quack” than a “croak”!

I tried to pick one up, but the best I could do was get it on my shoe.

This was my last day at Nolde for service, but it was such a great time and the people there were great. I will definitely visit again, and if I get the chance to volunteer during the summer, would love to be there again.

Team PACK’s First Day On The Job With Nolde Forest

Last week a few of us in team PACK went over to Nolde to do our first service work with them. They had plenty of work for us to do inside the office, and outside. We started out by helping recycle old research journals which were just sitting around, a lot of them were from the ’70s and ’80s! There was a park area outside for kids which needed to be raked, but we decided to work on that another day when it wasn’t 30 degrees outside. After this, we helped put books for the free library back on the shelf after they were taken off for an event.

The Take a Book Leave a Book Library

The next task was a bit of a tedious one – the Nolde Educational Center still uses a card catalog system, and our job was to sort through and remove the cards for the journals which we had recycled earlier. It took a bit of time, but I put on music and had a good time regardless.

Finally to finish off the day of work we helped prepare for events that Nolde holds for kids by cutting out paper turtles.

The people the work for Nolde were great and gave us plenty of things to do, and we are excited to go back and do some more work.

PACK Update – Starting Work Soon

Team PACK is getting ready to start up our work with Nolde. Last month we met with Rachel from Nolde Forest. We talked with here about what work we will be doing, what days we will be working, and stuff like that. What we will be doing primarily is raking up the area around the education center. Nolde often has groups of school children visit for the day, so cleaning up the area allows the kids to play around and experience more of the forest.

Because of the schedule of Nolde Forest, we were not able to do any work during February. But now that we are in to the middle of March, we will be able to start doing work for Nolde. We are all excited to be able to work with the people at Nolde to make the forest better.

Getting Started

We’ve finally met with our organization January 31st, 2018! As you know, we are working with Nolde Forest. They have a very beautiful scenery and the camp leader, Rachel Baur was very sweet and great at explaining our task. Our main task is to help keep the forest clean for visitors and children who attend for camp. We are very excited to start our volunteer work at Nolde. Thanks for keeping up with PACK! : )

Exploring With the PACK – Intro Post

Hi! We are team PACK We are very excited to be getting started with our Environmental Awareness & Community Action Project (EACAP) this semester! We have four members in our team, and we all attend Penn State Berks. We’ll now take the time to introduce ourselves.

Alex – I am a sophomore majoring in Information Science and Technology. I enjoy hiking, so I am glad to be able to spend my time maintaining Nolde’s trails.

Caedmon – I am a junior majoring in Information Science and Technology. I enjoy music, learning languages, and playing guitar. I like to take walks in my free time in the area, and have been to Nolde in the past, so helping out Nolde will be a real pleasure.

Keyonna – I am a sophomore majoring in Hospitality Management. I enjoy hanging with friends and family. This project interested me because I am big on recycling and helping the environment.

Princess – I am a freshman majoring in Hospitality Management. This project has me interested because I feel that it is very important to maintain the nature that we have around us.

We will be working with Nolde Forest on projects which they have made available to us. This could be tracking local birds, or walking on the trails to pick up trash. We all find this opportunity exciting, especially so because we are allowed to do it as a part of the project for our class. We hope that we will be able to work very closely with the staff at Nolde to put in a lot of work for the forest.
