Final Post (Team CAKE) 5/1/2015

Team CAKE would like to first of all thank everyone who has been keeping up with our posts on this site.  We would also like to thank Dr. K as well as Kathy at Blue Marsh Lake for giving us the opportunity to spend time volunteering and helping out the community.  We had a lot of fun during our work day as well as in class in general.  We learned a lot about the pacific trash vortex and enjoyed sharing our research with our classmates.  We also enjoyed hearing everyone else’s presentations in class over the past week.

Project Showcase (Team CAKE) 4/21/15

As a celebration of Earth Week (April 20-24), BiSci3 students had the opportunity to showcase our research and service projects to fellow students, as well as faculty, staff, and community partners. It was great to finally learn more about the projects our classmates have been working on throughout the semester, as well as see our own work as a finished project. Team CAKE will be giving a presentation on the Pacific Trash Vortex and our work at Blue Marsh Lake on Thursday, 4/23 during our class period.

First Work Day At Blue Marsh Lake (Team CAKE) 4/11/15

Today our team went out to Blue Marsh Lake and began our work on the flower beds.  We cleared out the left bed of the visitor’s center as well as the ones surrounding the ranger station and conference center.  We pulled weeds out of the flower beds and got rid of the dead plants.  Fortunately we had beautiful weather and we were able to work for seven hours (11:00 to 6:00).  We are looking forward to going back on April 17 to help out for a few more hours.

Project Orientation (Team Cake) 3/27/15

On Saturday March 27th, our team met with Hallie and Kathy at Blue Marsh. Hallie introduced us to the area and the project we will be working on. We also filled out some paperwork concerning safety and consent. Kathy came by a few minutes later and first took us to the Visitor Center to see the small surrounding gardens we will be working on. Then we drove just down the road to the Dry Brooks area Sensory Trail and gardens. In both of these gardens we will be weeding, removing dead plants and mulching. There is also some maintenance work that needs to be done on the Sensory Trail such as hanging news guide ropes and cleaning some of the displays.

Team Introduction (Team CAKE) 3/5/15

Hello all,

We would like to introduce our team for the EACAP project, 2015.  We are Team CAKE (Callie, Aly, Kyle, Eric).  Here’s a little bit about our team.  We are all undergraduate students at Penn State Berks in Reading, Pennsylvania.

Callie is a freshman public relations major from Scranton, Pennsylvania.

Aly is a sophomore social work major from Hamburg, Pennsylvania.

Kyle is a junior Information Sciences major from Hummelstown, Pennsylvania.

Eric is a junior Electro-Mechanical Engineering major from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

For our project, our team has been chosen to work with Blue Marsh Lake.  We will be assisting with trail tours around the Blue Marsh Lake area.  As we progress through this project we will keep this site updated with the details of our work.
