Project Showcase (Team CAKE) 4/21/15
As a celebration of Earth Week (April 20-24), BiSci3 students had the opportunity to showcase our research and service projects to fellow students, as well as faculty, staff, and community partners. It was great to finally learn more about the projects our classmates have been working on throughout the semester, as well as see our own work as a finished project. Team CAKE will be giving a presentation on the Pacific Trash Vortex and our work at Blue Marsh Lake on Thursday, 4/23 during our class period.
- Across campus, environmental statistics and quotes serve as a reminder to celebrate Earth Day and be conscious of our impact on the environment. How will you make your “Green Mark”?
Earth Day! (Team Stratz) 4/21/15
Today during our regularly scheduled Bi Sci class, Team Stratz was set up in the first floor of Gaige. We had our poster all set up and welcomed stragglers to learn about the work being done with the Food Recovery Network. Many people walked by and displayed interest into our topic. We discussed our board and had many great discussions with people walking by! In these two pictures, Team Stratz is shown as well as the board we produced! We look forward to presenting on Thursday during class!
Volunteering on April 18, 2015 and April 19, 2015
Team ABS spends another day at Blue Marsh-April 16th, 2015
This past Thursday, we spent the morning at the visitors center in Blue Marsh. Our job that day was to clean up the beds outside the center and re-mulch the area. We still had a couple more weeds to pull out on the back side of the center. We then had to open over 40 bags of mulch and spread them across the area to create the affect of the area looking brand new again! From when we first started to re-model the visitor center’s beds to now, it created such a difference and we can’t wait to complete the job. We will be finishing up the rest of the mulching soon! Check out our progress on our snapchat @absEACAP or by clicking on this video:
Hawk Mountaineers
We completed our eight hours at Hawk mountain working with both Ryan and David. We worked with Ryan in the garden, weeding it out and cleaning it up. We then hiked on a three mile trail and cleared it up of any obstructions. We also worked with David in the woods marking coordinates on numerous trees that are part of a study plot to observe bird activity.
Today we completed our tri fold for our presentation and are looking forward to informing our classmates and any viewers as we present on earth day and our assigned class presentation date.
Marvel’s last day at Blue Marsh on April 18,2015
After Saturday at Blue Marsh Lake, I found something interesting, and upsetting. Most of the trash we got are cigarette, beverage bottles and plastic package for snacks. I encourage visitors to take care of our environment by stop littering.

Interview with Kathy about lake pollution (Team Blue Marsh) April 16th, 2015
Team Members: Lauren Murphy, Lindsay Gay, Darby Schock, and Nathan Hoffman
Recently we sat down with Kathy, our Blue Marsh project supervisor and discussed some of the parks major contributors of water pollution. She explained that the main factors of water pollution in Blue Marsh Lake come from geese droppings, run-off from farms upstream, and park visitors. We were surprised to learn that park visitors were the least contributing factor to the parks water pollution. Blue Marsh, and private contractors test the water weekly for pollutant counts in different parts in the lake, to determine the safety of the water, especially in the swimming area. During the past few years pollution has been at a minimum, and the lake has not had any severe problems with water pollutants. However, Kathy explained that aside from geese droppings, run-off from farms upstream that use pesticides were a major problem for the lake that resulted in the closure of swimming areas. All of these pollutants caused an algae bloom which caused a drastic rise in the amount of bacteria in the lake which lead to unsafe swimming waters.
Kathy also explained that Blue Marsh controls a dam that releases cool water downstream into the Tulpehocken River to control the water temperature for trout, thus making the Tulpehocken River one of the best trout fishing destinations in the world. Trout can only live in conidtions with excellent peramiters, because of this, cold water is released downstream from the lower dam to sustain these conditions.
Here are some funny pictures from our recent adventures at Blue Marsh while we removed the rotted railroad ties.
Hard Work Pays Off (Team Stratz) 4/16/2015
Today during our class period, the Bi Sci group Team Stratz is seen below working diligently on our poster board as well as on the PowerPoint. Our group consists of Tina, Greg, Keeanu, Pearce, and Kyle (taking the picture). The group also previously worked on a flyer which will hopefully be displayed during Earth Day. Much more to come from this group!
