Service Project Fair 11/28

For class on Monday November 28, we did a service project fair in the Gaige lobby. Here we brought in our finished posters and 2 samples of the different types of stepping stones we are taking to Glenside Elementary are. On our poster we talked about our research topic which was ocean pollution and the different aspects of that as well as our service project with Glenside in thier garden. The two different stepping stones that we brought for the display was one grade level stone and one greeting stone. For the different grade levels, 1st-5th, we decided to do two stepping stones for each grade level. Then for the greeting stepping stones we found six different ways to say hello in six different languages since we already speak English. So we decided to do hello, hola, aloha, guten tag, konnichiwa, ciao, and bonjour. These all are painted either red or blue and then w added a design to these stones.

Our Next Stepping Stone at Glenside

Our Squash is certainly working with Glenside Elementary to create stepping stones for each grade level to put in their garden. We have discussed that we are using bigger stones for the grade levels and that we will be doing 2 stones for each grade. Then we decided that we were going to use smaller stones that will have greetings from different languages, which will bring more diversity to Glenside. Each stone will be painted with colors that match the color scheme that is already in the garden. We figured that this would be a great addition to their garden so the students can learn how to say hello in different languages.

Update on 10/28 class time

Today our group accomplished a good amount. We discussed about what our next wordpress post would be and the content we were going to put into this post. We then talked about our research and what we are doing next. Our research is going great so far, but we aren’t fully there done yet. Our research topic is Ocean Pollution and there is a whole post that will be put up about what we are doing  We are trying to figure out what our project will for the presentations we have to do. We also discussed about what we are definately doing at Glenside with the vice principal.

Ocean Pollution Research

My Squash decided to do research on ocean pollution and how it affects the environment.  We, as a team, came up with some great websites to do the research and then worked to find the research individually.  It is all on a collective document so everyone on our team knows what we are researching.  The main topic is about plastic in the ocean, how it affects the animals, and how it changes the environment.  Another topic is how it builds up and created the Great Pacific Garbage Patch in the ocean.

A turtle is caught in a fishnet trap. The Rainbow Warrior is in the Mediterranean for a three month expedition "Defending Our Mediterranean". Greenpeace is calling for the creation of marine reserves in the Mediterranean Sea, as part of a global network covering 40% of our seas and oceans.

My Squash Update

My Squash will be attending Glenside with another group in BISCI and work on the same project. It will be a team effort because the Assistant Principal feels more comfortable with at least 6-8 people supervising. We will be giving each child at Glenside Elementary a rock. On each rock there will be a special and fun design that was created and painted by each student. For example, a child could paint “Bonjour”, “Hello”, or “Hola.” The rock could also have a picture of the environment with trees, mountains, or rivers. Students can also draw a cute animals that plays a huge role in the ecosystem. This activity not only teaches students at Glenside more about taking care of their garden and earth, but how to have fun with science and use their imagination.

We will be working with Glenside Elementary on their sustainable projects. The one that we chose to work on is creating a garden and campus enhancing features to make the elementary school more sustainable.

We are interested in gaining knowledge on how to make a simple action more sustainable. For example we will be helping the elementary school create sustainable actions like bird feeders, gardening, and so much more to help create awareness in the elementary school.
