Frequently Asked Questions

How can students post videos to Canvas discussion forums?

Instructor’s may want to create discussion threads where students introduce themselves by posting a video. We recommend using Kaltura Express Capture.

How to Create and Post your Class Introduction
  • In the discussion forum, begin your post clicking Reply.
  • Then click on the App Icon (see below). This is where you will access the Kaltura tool to record your Introduction.

Choose the icon that looks like an electrical plug from the editing window

  • From the drop-down, choose Embed Kaltura Media. (If not shown, click View All and then choose from list.)
  • Click the + Add New button in the upper right hand section of the screen and choose Express Capture (see below).

Click Add New button and then select Express Capture from the dropdown menu

  • Click the red circle to begin recording. (Allow Canvas/Kaltura to access your camera/mic)
  • Record your Introduction
  • Upon completion, click on the white square to stop recording.
  • If you are satisfied with your recording, click Use This. If you want to re-record, click Record Again. (Scroll down if you don’t see this.)
  • Once you have clicked on Use This button, it might take the system a few moments to process your recording. Once it is finished it will say Upload Completed.
  • Select Save and Embed in the upper right hand corner.
  • Your Class Introduction will embed into the post and then you may Post Reply.

Note: you may click on Post Reply even if the “Media is being processed” message is still appearing.
