Introduction to Rhetorical Analysis

Have you ever loved a product so much, yet you just want to hate it because of what it represents? This idea of promoting a false message through the use of products that define standards, is common in the beauty industry, specially through make-up products. Maybelline, an American multinational cosmetic company, is evidence of how the beauty industry alters their message to emphasize the unrealistic beauty standards held up in our society, yet they counter the message with hues of naturalism and inner beauty. Through the use of commonplaces (that create a notion of artificial beauty being higher than natural beauty) and rhetorical situation (targeting audiences at specific age groups), beauty companies such as Maybelline convince the public that their products are worthwhile in order to feel beautiful, unlike other companies, such as Dove, who’s messages solely promote inner beauty.

Above reads the rough draft of my introduction to the rhetorical analysis essay. To further outline my topic, for the speech on rhetorical analysis, I want to focus on setting up the rhetorical situation for the audience to make them understand the level of misinterpretation that occurs in our beauty industry. Rather than set-up my speech like my essay to pinpoint every point of commonplace and what they mean in a larger setting, I think it will be more purposeful to focus on rhetorical situation as described above with an addition of commonplaces throughout.

  1. You have a really strong introduction that outlines your paper very well. I felt your thesis was strong and easy to understand how you are going to approach your body paragrahphs.

  2. I liked your introduction because it grasped my attention quickly. I could easily see where your thesis was and it effectively outlined the rest of the paper. I agree with your choice of narrowing down your focus on the speech portion.
