One of my favorite TED Talks that I have seen is by the novelist, Chimamanda Adichie.
Within this TED Talk, she talks us through the idea of finding your own voice, specifically a cultural voice. In this idea, which is heavily prominent today, she mentions a warning about singling in on an individual story to represent various cultures around us. While it is good to be in conversation with those how have gained an authentic voice for who they are, perspective is key to also identifying multiple layers of a culture or country to agin better understanding. When society uses one instance to label something as different, they develop a misunderstanding and only contribute to the lost voices that go unheard when the idea is to amplify our voices. For these reasons, I find her TED Talk powerful not only within her story but they way she conveys her audience.
Moving on to my Unit Two project, and TED Talk, I think the ideas are endless. One brainstormed idea that I thought of considering is the evolution of food and dieting in society. Specifically, I would focus on the evolution of food substitutes and how they have changed dieting not for “fun” but for those who deal with diets is a necessity to digest. From personal experience with GI issues and chronic illness, I have learned a lot about this topic in the past two years with even more ahead of me to explore. I think there is a large misconception of having food substitutes for those on diets to lose weight or because they are vegetarian, but the impact that substitutions have had on diets such as a Low FODMAP diet is crucial.
I am sure many people do not even know the diet I mentioned above, which also goes to show the evolution of types of diet. In today’s world, many of us have heard the term “diet culture” in which dieting is negatively broadcasted to the public causing great health concerns and in reality unhealthy eating. While this is true, there are also diets that serve purpose and meaning medically to those suffering, yet the term has been portrayed for such a long time to have the connotation of weight loss associated with it which is not always true.
This a topic that I have strong ideas about because of personal experience so I think it would be easy for me to craft an argument around the ideas above, but let me know if this is too broad or if I need a stronger topic to pursue a better argument.
I like your idea for your unit two project. I got the idea that you are passionate and already pretty knowledgeable which will hep you. I also felt it was unique and thoughtful how you chose to focus on diets as a necessity, which is definitely a connotation that has been lost today.
This would be an interesting idea for a TED talk. The world is very traditional in the way that it views dieting. A new perspective might serve to make it more accepting to other lifestyles
This topic would be very interesting as a TED Talk because it is not widely discussed. It would also be educational because many people see dieting as only for losing weight. I think other reasons for dieting are not clearly represented in the limelight. This topic is not overly broad and it has plenty of research. It would be a great fit for the TED Talk style speech.
