Currently, my idea for the Unit Two project is to still analyze the shift of food substitutes and diet culture in the United States.
For my search in resources, I tried to find mostly peer reviewed and scholarly articles for the foundation of my research.
The first source (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5390324/) that I want to include in my research is about the Low FODMAP diet, which I mentioned before during my brainstorm. This is a diet that I do not think many people know about, yet much like the article explains, it is a efficient diet that is very helpful to those who are struggle with food processing/digestion as described in the article. I feel as if it is important to include this in my shift paper because it serves as a foundation to diets outside of the “American diet culture” and proves why food substitutions are important for those who absolutely need them, rather then use them as a trend.
The next article (https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/military-diet-substitutes) that I want to include is titled, “10 Food Substitutions for the Military Diet,” which is the reason I am analyzing the shift of food substitutions for diet culture versus diet necessities. This article, while it states various food substitution possibilities, is using food substitutes in order to proactively lose “ten pounds in a week.” Much like this statement, society has turned food substitutions into an almost abused substance to emphasis false diets that are broadcasted throughout media in unhealthy ways. While this article does not provide much data, the purpose behind it is something that I can use to develop details into my shift.
Lastly, I found an article on Google Scholar (https://academic.oup.com/nutritionreviews/article/75/1/2/2684501?login=true) that talked about the sustainability approach to new food choices and dieting. Although this does not directly align to my topic, I thought it was an important idea to take into consideration when writing my paper and TED Talk because this evolution is beyond just human involvement, but like most things it also has an environmental impact. While this idea reigns true to most people that view the vegetarian diet as an environmental diet, all dieting has an impact on the environment too. I will probably include some aspect of this article in my project, it is just a matter of where I will add it in without getting too confusing.
As a side note, I realized as I was looking for sources that I may need to narrow down what I search for being that substitutions is a broad area. I may look further into milk substitutions or meat substitutions to better align my paper to the Low FODMAP diet or health issues that require certain substitutions.
You seem like you have a great grip on your topic. It’s definitely clear that that the sources you have gathered will support your argument! Can’t wait to here more!
I think all your sources and plans on utilizing them are good for your topic. It may be interesting to see how you tie in the environmental aspect of dieting. I think the idea of seeing how diet culture has shifted is interesting because we often focus on only the weight loss portion. Society does not talk much about the health factors in dieting.
