Off-label Consequences

Throughout the last couple of months, the drug Ozempic has been called to attention. Ozempic- a drug used to treat diabetes- is gaining attention as celebrities are being accused of taking the drug to lose weight in a short amount of time. The drug Ozempic was first approved in 2017 by the Food and Drug Administration to treat diabetes at first, but in 2021 they approved it to treat obesity. Since then celebrities like Elon Musk tweeted about how he uses Ozempic to stay fit. Since then the drug has been growing in popularity.

As Ozempics popularity increased, many doctors think that more people have sought ways to take the drug for weight loss — either by finding a physician who will prescribe it to them off-label, or by seeking the drug out online. It’s not uncommon for doctors to prescribe medications for “off-label” use, or for a different purpose from what the medication is specifically intended for.

Researchers and doctors say there isn’t enough evidence to determine whether Ozempic is dangerous for use outside the intended FDA-approved use. However, as with every medication experts cautioned against people seeking out Ozempic the medication for off-label use. This drug has not been tested in people with lower body weights and it is possible that individuals outside the group.
