Mumford & Sons- Sigh No More

Hey guys!! So I’m really excited about my passion blog this week, because I have decided to review one of my favorite albums of all time, Sigh No More by Mumford & Sons. This does have an aspect of “kairos” in it, since I just bought the album on vinyl, and am sooo excited about it. This album holds a lot of special meaning to me that I don’t really know how to describe, but it was in a way the soundtrack to my sophomore year of high school. It seems weird to say, but it helped me through some pretty rough days, and listening to it not brings back so many vivid memories, both good and bad.

Mumford & Sons is a band that I really deeply admire, so I’m going to now share a little bit of background information about them! This wonderful band was formed in December 2007 in West London by Marcus Mumford (lead vocals, guitar, drums, mandolin), Ben Lovett (vocals, keyboards, accordion, drums), Winston Marshall (vocals, banjo, guitar, resonator guitar, dobro) and Ted Dwane (vocals, string bass, drums, guitar). As you can see, this band incorporates many unique instruments, which help to create their indie and rock folk sound that they are known so well for. They had their start with their debut EP Love Your Ground, which they performed in small venues around England before they were very well known. Their debut LP, Sigh No More, was released in the UK and Ireland in October 2009, and February 2010 in the US. The album reached number one in Ireland, Australia and New Zealand, and eventually peaked at number two on the UK Albums Chart and the Billboard 200 in the US. They recieved two Grammys for this album, and another for their follow-up album, Babel, released in September 2012. In September 2013, the band announced they were going on hiatus for a “considerable amount of time, and in July, announced that they were currently recording music for a third album.

Okay, now onto Sigh No More! In my opinion, this album is amazing from beginning to end, and should only be listened to straight through from beginning to end, but there are still a few songs that stick out to me. I’ll start with “Winter Winds,” which is definitely one of my favorite songs of all time. I think it really epitomizes Mumford’s sound, and their eloquent lyrics. The Next song, “Roll Away Your Stone,” has a much quicker tempo, and I personally really love it because some of their lyrics are deviated from Shakespeare’s “Macbeth,” which I thought was the coolest thing when I came to this realization, since I personally really love Shakespeare. They reference many pieces of literature in their songs, especially Shakespeare, and even Sigh No More is a reference to Shakespeare’s “Much Ado About Nothing.” Another song off of this album that I wanted to mention is “Dust Bowl Dance.” This song is unique because it is one of the few songs on the album where the band, especially Marcus (lead singer) really cuts loose and gets really angry. I think it gives the album a new aspect to it, which I really love.

I could go on about this band and this album for a really long time, but I’m going to stop there! I would recommend Mumford & Sons to literally anyone, because i think they have such a special and calming sound. That’s it for now, talk to ya next week!

Mumford & Sons sounds like a special album for you. I really love how you are always able to identify the instruments in a song, band or album because it makes it easier for the reader to imagine the song. Also, because you identify what instruments the album has you make the reader grow interest on the album. I have never heard anything similar to the Mumford & Sons album (mainly because Im always lost in the top 10 in itunes), but I will give it a try this weekend.
