Surrealist Posters – Fall 2021

The Surrealist Poster Project focuses on the creation of a three poster series of images designed to communicate the story of Resilience, and to depict it in an artistic and abstract way. Taylor Shipton’s Graphic Design 300 class spent several weeks brainstorming their ideas before bringing them into full color fruition in their works, each titled in theme with the idea of Resilience. These posters are only the first step to creating a larger project which intends to embrace the space in the Collaboration Commons, set to debut in Spring 2022.

Creating the Perfect Shot

Students in GD 300 were split into teams of two to work on the Surrealist Poster Project and tasked with creating an image that tells a story of Resilience through abstract images. Each team was given time in a photo studio space to shoot, but with a catch – all teams must find or create their own materials to use in their photos.

Students went to thrift shops to look for clothing and accessories for their models, as well as to find props and items to use as part of their photography sets. Items that were purchased were also modified to suit the needs of each individual photo for each shoot. Every photoshoot set was created by hand to best cater to the students visions of what their poster would portray. The process was sometimes long and could be tedious, but the amount of work the students put into their projects can be seen in each project outcome.
