Multimedia Design – Spring 2022

In the Spring 2022 semester, the Junior GD 303 Class focused on taking their work from the Surrealist Poster Project from Fall 2021 and making it into multiple new multimedia projects. Instructed by Ryan Russell, the students created three major pieces of work, a themed social media campaign, animated posters, and immersive spaces.

The Social Media Campaign

Each pair of students was instructed to use their original poster project and other detail shots from those photoshoots to create a 9-part social media campaign. The students took pieces from their works and arranged them in visually interesting ways, as well as created written posts and captions for each of their photos. The social media campaign was intended to bring awareness to a University Libraries event happening on April 23rd.

These pairs were each given three days to show all 9 of their posts. Posts were automatically posted using a content manager at 11 AM, 2 PM, and 6 PM daily. Overall, the posts ran on Instagram for almost exactly one month, from March 27th to April 23rd.

Animating the Surrealist Posters

In GD 303, students were asked to take their work from the Fall 2021 Semester and expand upon it to create an animated rendition of their Surrealist Poster. The animated effects are intended to serve as a thoughtful enhancement to the poster project. The Juniors took their animations in many different directions including moving the subjects of their photos, creating subtle yet intriguing background elements, and adding in two dimensional moving parts as shown in this video.

To create their moving pieces, the students used Adobe After Effects to create frame by frame movements using preexisting photo elements. These animations then went through a process of critique, before being finalized for the Evanisko Project Displays.

Creating an Immersive Experience

In the Fall 2021 semester, the Junior Graphic Design class took a trip to Pittsburgh PA to view the Immersive Van Gogh Experience, “a completely new way of encountering art.”

Using the Van Gogh exhibit as inspiration, the students of GD 303 took it upon themselves to create immersive experiences for the general public. These experiences were created to be either projected or physical, or even a mix of both. “On the Rebound” created a Van Gogh Exhibit style 3D Projection for their immersive experience, mocked up on the right to be shown inside of a shipping container.
