Don’t Say It: A Villanelle by Kristina Stokes

Apparently there are things you aren’t supposed to say,

things that will earn you a dirty look or a death stare,

and I’m great at finding the wrong thing to say.

“Wait. Weren’t you going to pay?”

while eating the bulk of the pretzel you forced her to share.

Apparently there are things you aren’t supposed to say.

“Oh. So…you’re planning to stay?”

when you were hoping this friendly threesome would drop to a pair

and…I’m great at finding the wrong thing to say.

“Hey! I think I see your first gray!”

to your husband, in public, but that one’s not fair.

Apparently? There are things you aren’t supposed to say!

“Well aren’t you just sunshine’s best ray?”

as your daughter delivers snark, eye rolls, and sighs to spare–

and I’m great at finding the wrong thing to say.

“One wash and it’ll totally fray.”

at a pyramid-scheme-party for pants gets a huge glare.

Apparently there are things you aren’t supposed to say,

and I’m great at finding the wrong thing to say!
