As a Penn State student, you have access to a lot of software for free. You can either use WebApps which allows you to use MS Office, Mathematica and MatLab among others online. However, these programs run via your browser and you will always need an internet connection if you would like to use them.
Fortunately, we can also download most relevant software for free. There are three different sites that are particularly useful:
-
- The website of the ITS department has collected various useful software and has categorized it neatly. Just have a look: https://downloads.its.psu.edu/
- The following website is great to download MS Office for free. Go to https://software.psu.edu/ and choose “MICROSOFT LICENSE Student Microsoft Office from Kivuto”. You will be asked for you penn state email address several times, but other than that the procedure is rather straightforward. You can also find other software there, but not all are provided for free (for example, you will have to pay $17 for a Mathematica student license).
- For those in the Eberly College of Science, to get the latest version of Mathematica for your own computer, follow the instruction written here. Good luck! (Should this link expire, you can consult Science IT help desk helpdesk@science.psu.edu.)
