We highly recommend hiring guides to explore Morocco. The conference organizers and the hotel can arrange guides. Guides are relatively affordable (especially if in a group) and safe. However, Morocco is a very safe country and it is possible for instance to rent a car and explore alone or as a group.
Anything in bold is highly recommended by the local conference organizers.
In the City of Fez:
- Fez el Bali or Fes el Bali “Old Medina of Fez”
- One of the oldest living medieval cities and a world heritage site according to UNESCO. Fez was founded in 789AD and was the capital of Morocco until 1912. It is home to what many consider the oldest university in the world, Al-Quaraouine University founded by a woman, Fatima Al-Fihria in 859AD. The whole medina with its mederasas (schools), mosques, souks (markets), palaces and narrow streets is a masterpiece of Islamic and Andalusian/Moorish architecture. The same hands that carved its wood, marble, plaster, and ceramics did the same in Moslem Spain (Al-Anadalus; Andalucia) in power centers such as Cordoba, Sevilla and Granada.
