The Death of True Music

Anyone knows that writing can be tough, especially when it has to be for a long paper and the subject is something you are not interested in. So while brainstorming for this paradigm shift assignment I was deciding between multiple topics. Eventually though, I decided on how the pop music has been dumb-downed and all songs sound somewhat identical. This may sound somewhat simple, but it is actually complex. Before this, in the times of our parents, songs had meaning and artists sang to portray a message. They did not become famous by bragging about their sexual history, drug use, or partying daily. Songs were pieces of art that were meant to oppose something important, make the population feel good, or explain a cause. This has a direct correlation with the dumbing down of our society. Songs contain simply catchy lyrics and redundant beats to get initial satisfaction. The population now has no patience to listen to guitar or drum solos, they need the beat drop quick and they need it more than once.
As for the history of this subject, the death of music as art and the beginning of the shift can be seen in the late 80’s and 90’s. During this era the HIV and AIDS diseases engulfed New York City. And as it is today, the biggest city in the world was the center of the arts. Music, theatre, dancing and acting all called New York their home. And with these diseases also came the death of the real artists and creators of music and theatre. For example, during this time the musical Rent first showed on Broadway. It is known at one of the most profound and impactful musicals ever. Now, The Spongebob Musical is making its way to the Broadway stage. Back in the times of true art, this would never be acceptable. Music and art have obviously taken a major step back and I plan to research this shift in my paper.

  1. I think this is a great topic to talk about for your paradigm shift paper. It’s definitely something that will affect your audience because we all hear these types of music on a daily basis. I know I get frustrated with the repetition and shallowness of some of today’s songs. I think it would be interesting to talk about how many people are shifting backwards now and listening to old music rather than the newer artists. Either way, there’s a lot of history in this topic and you will have no problem going into detail about it through 8-10 pages in writing. Be sure to uses specific examples of lyrics, artists, and historical contexts to support the claim you decide to make about what this change in music says about our society today. Overall, this is a very interesting topic and I can’t wait to see what direction you decide to go with it!
