Promotions

Climbing that corporate latter is one of the major joys of American society. The ability to advance from a lower position is, in essence, the American Dream! The American dream dates back to the 1600’s when European immigrants had hopes and dreams of unexplored content. This includes be prosperous in business and owning land.

Needless to say that getting a leg up is definitely something important to Americans, me included. Recently a position for a Culinary Apprentice was advertised. This included picking my own hours, as well as getting a 50 cent raise. I was instantly intrigued and put in an application right away.

In order to get a promotion examiner.com suggests a few good habits that I will reiterate for you here, most of which I tried to follow.

  1. Be Proactive AKA take initiative
  2. Begin any job with an idea of the ideal characteristics you need to display in order to get the promotion
  3. Make sure you prioritize goals, and make sure all your efforts are putting you towards an end goal
  4. Be a team player
  5. First, try to understand, and then try to make others understand you. Be a genuine listener
  6. Make sure mentally, emotionally, and physically you are sharp and on cue in the workplace.

The basic duty of an Apprentice is to work underneath a full time culinary chef, and learn about cooking and the kitchen procedure. They are often assigned tedious tasks such as prep or even cooking a repetitive dish.

Specifically in south I would be doing about the same as a basic description.

I recently had the interview and I believe it went well! I was asked the basic questions about my strengths and weaknesses, and what I liked and disliked about work in the south food district. From there I got situational questions. I believe and hope I answered them correctly. I should be finding out soon, so fingers crossed!

After reading all your posts, I feel like I should work in South since I am a hospitality major and need the hours. Although, I am not too interested in going into the restaurant side of hospitality but rather the hotel side. In the next few years I am going to have to take some cooking classes and this job would definitely would be a good preparation. Maybe I will think about it. I definitely think that promotions are one of the most important things. In my organizational behavior class, we learned that ability to move up in your job is one of the most important things people consider when picking a job. Additionally, it helps determine whether or not you like your job. Good luck!
