Student Projects

What kind of research projects do students design in the FRI?

The cycle of the scientific method

Student researchers in the FRI learn by engaging in the cycle of the scientific method! We learn by doing science as science is done!

  1. Ask a biological question to investigate.
  2. Learn from scientists with different perspectives who have been interested in similar questions.
  3. Construct a hypothesis based on what is currently understood.
  4. Design an experimental test with a prediction that supports the hypothesis, and therefor a prediction that can also reject the hypothesis.
  5. Troubleshoot the experiment to work with proper controls.
  6. Collect data from the experiment, analyze the data and draw conclusions.
  7. Communicate your results so that others can learn from your perspective.
  8. Continue to pursue more biological questions and stay curious!

Fall Research Investigations

Fall 2023 FRI research celebration

Pictured in order back row to front row, left to right: Lynnae, Sarren, Brendan, T.J., Sean, Jessie, Lea, Priya, Anne, Jaylie, Dr. Sjogren.During the Fall semester student researchers are trained with molecular biology and microbiology research skills. Then they take on a biological investigation of their own design and each research develops their own independent research project! At the end of the semester we celebrate as a learning community by presenting our findings and future directions!

Spring Research Mentorship

Following the first semester of research in the Fall, students select from research topics that align with our Spring faculty’s research programs. Our team of internationally recognized biology professors mentor students through a semester of scientific investigations! After a year of mentored research, students design posters to present their findings at the Undergraduate Exhibition!
