Beyond FRI

Are you interested in more undergraduate research opportunities?

Consider applying for an undergraduate research opportunity at Penn State!

Undergraduate Eduction at Penn State curates an undergraduate research opportunities database with available opportunities! Previous FRI students recommend paying attention to the search settings, selecting your campus (Ex: University Park) and the Life Sciences research area.

Consider reaching out directly to Research Faculty at Penn State!

Do you have an interest in a biological topic that one of our wonderful Biology Research Faculty investigates? Reach out to them directly and share your interest & joy for biology and inquire if there are any opportunities to work in their lab in the future! This skill can often be referred to as a “cold email” (a historical revision of the term “cold call” when you would call someone you did not know).

Consider applying for a Summer REU!

U.S. National Science Foundation logoThe National Science Foundations Research Experience for Undergraduate (NSF REU) has an entire database of opportunities! You can search for an NSF REU site in any science field or by location! REU opportunities are available to all undergraduate students before they graduate, and applications are typically due in January-February for the summer of that year. Some are still open in March and April like “Extreme Biofilms.” There are SO MANY interesting research opportunities. Summer of 2024 has 742 listings! Check them out and apply now!
