Last week’s louse (Friday Night Lice – week 3) was Pecaroecus javalii Babcock & Ewing, 1938 (Anoplura: Pecaroecidae), a parasite of the Collared Peccary, Pecari tajacu (Tayassuidae). This louse was put into its own family, Pecaroecidae, by Kéler, in 1963.
The specimens in the louse images last week are PSUC_FEM 10005498 (female) and PSUC_FEM 10005497 (male). The original species description of this louse can be viewed through he Biodiversity Heritage Library. Here’s one of our nymphal specimens, PSUC_FEM 10005495, which was collected off a peccary in west Texas in 1969.
