While I would like to restart the Friday Night Lice segment to our blog, today’s holiday called for something else. I thought it appropriate on this Halloween Day to introduce one of the bloodsuckers that I encountered in one of my familiar haunts, the Frost. Okay, enough of the puns (for today). This is as festive as I get, friends.
Curation is a fascinating exploration of stories and history. It’s the perfect way to spend the day if one is a book lover or collector-exploring the world on a microscope slide. The printed and handwritten details of this sample provide a short biography for the specimen. She was found on the head of a Pelagic cormorant on St. Paul Island, Alaska on July 22, 1980. Her name is Ixodes signatus, which was described in 1895 by Birula. While I spend most of my day labeling and imaging many different specimens that look like brown specks to the naked eye, they are still bits of history to be examined.
Enjoy exploring the tricks and treats of today, and stay tuned for next week’s post!
