Love insects? Looking for a job this summer?
The Frost Entomological Museum at Penn State is currently looking for enthusiastic, self-motivated, and organized students to assist the improvement of the research collection. The museum houses the world’s most diverse collection of sucking lice (Anoplura) and large collections of aphids and dragonflies. Museum assistants are needed to help transfer the collection into new storage and to digitize specimens. The assistant may also participate in outreach activities.
Duties: Computer data entry (digitization) of insect specimen labels, imaging specimens, moving and organizing insect specimens (individual and large drawers), locating latitude and longitude for collecting events (georeferencing), blog writing. One position may also involve DNA extraction and sequencing from insect specimens.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Proficiency in office software packages, including Google Docs/Sheets, Adobe Acrobat, etc., and ability to work with online databases
- Interest in entomology/biodiversity
- Attention to detail and good organizational skills
- Excellent written English skills
- Be available to work throughout the semester, on weekdays during business hours.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in macro photography and image stacking
- Superior analytical, organizational, and communication (oral and written) skills
- Ability to adapt quickly to the various tasks and responsibilities
- Must work well in a team and laboratory environment
- Ability to take initiative and solve problems
Salary/Hours: $10.00 per hour, 10–40 hours/week, 6/1/15-12/31/15
