Last week we posted this fantastic specimen, PSUC_FEM 10005516, as our mystery louse. It is a Haematopinus oryx Fiedler & Stampa, 1958 specimen, collected off an Oryx sp. in Botswana in 1965. Based on the locality, and this handy dandy list of known Anoplura hosts, my guess is that the host mammal species is the Gemsbock, Oryx gazella (Linnaeus, 1758) (Bovidae).
I wonder if our North American Gemsbock, (introduced into New Mexico in the 1970s) came over with these lice or whether they’ve been infested by any native or other introduced species of Haematopinus. Take a good look and let us know what you find!
