As introduced in module 10 about Integrated Pest Management(IPM), it is a scientific principle of managing pests and the relation to economic efficiency. But what we should know about IPM regarding the important parts and processes?
According to the website “beyond pesticides”, the IPM program includes process of monitoring which is to determine the pest infection level of local area; record keeping, to record and identify all the information about pest types and what some possible solutions are suggested to improve the situation; action level and prevention, modifying current human health and economic condition and any kind of structure to fit the best solution possible for the future; and evaluation, to finalize the program by choosing appropriate pesticide which is more friendly to environment, and to test how well the IPM program works (Beyond Pesticides).
What are the parts that we should consider as important to IPM program? First of all, we should be able to identify and tell types of pests as targets, then search for pests’ favored habitats and try to change or break the way they live to reduce the population of pests without too much of toxic pesticide use. Using pests’ natural predators can be one way and applying less chemicals in pesticide will be another possible solution to reduce pests while protecting environment in the mean time.
