Kendall Jenner Ad

The Kendall Jenner ad represents the now disavowed ideology of “the white savior”. This ideology was essentially that a white male or female was going to solve the problems of those who were not white or of a different religion. The commercial also trivzializes police brutality and actual protests. It does this by showing Kendall ending a police standoff with protestors simply by handing them a can of coke.

From the Desk of a Multimedia Journal

Imagine being in the middle of a war zone. The poverty and violence is at an all time high. Now imagine having to be there to report a story in the middle of this, as a woman. This is exactly the work that Lauren Bohn does every day to document the lives of the many diverse people she meets as a multimedia journalist. Lauren Bohn is a multimedia journalist currently living in Istanbul, Turkey whose blog documents her travels across the middle east and the rest of the world interviewing everyday people and learning what it’s like to live a day in their lives. I enjoy reading her entries because before she starts speaking about the person’s life she is documenting, she gives a slight background on what is going on in their country. Lauren also keeps her blogs short and to the point. She also uses vivid descriptions in her articles to paint a picture for her reader that keeps them invested in the article. Although the language of the article is a great benefit to the reader, the layout of the blog could use some improvement.

The blog entries are not grouped in any particular way and they are also tucked away on the website where they can be found. Lauren’s articles are hard to find and some of the different media platforms sometimes are difficult to open. However, these minor mishaps are not enough to take away from the amazing way Lauren is using her platform as a journalist to keep her readers informed of how people in the Middle East and beyond are living and how the current events going on overseas is affecting their daily lives. I feel that the language and the simple layout of the blog posts contribute greatly the success of Lauren Bohn’s blog.

Buzzfeed, in recent years has become one of the most popular news outlets among millennials because of its “easy to read” language and its diverse news topics. What I love most about Buzzfeed is that all of the news I am looking for, from celebrity news, to real world issues, to what type of cake frosting is the easiest to make is all featured just on the homepage in an organized fashion. I never have to go searching for the latest headlines, they’re perfectly organized all in one place or at the top of the page in their respective tabs. The layout of Buzzfeed is also appealing to readers because it has the most trending topics listed on the side of the page so that readers can see what the hottest news for that day is. The site also provides many visual aids and videos along with seemingly simple news articles in order to keep the reader interested in what the article is trying to say. Buzzfeed also succeeds in grabbing its readers by using language that appeals to the readers’ emotions. A headline recently came out that demonstrates this tactic. The article is entitled, “30 Heartbreaking Pictures of Animals Affected by Harvey”. These headlines make the readers want to click on the article by using language that plays to the readers emotions and keeps them wanting to find out more. What keeps the readers reading beyond the headlines and the initial first paragraph is the easy to read language that the article provides and also the non-bias attitude in the language of the piece. Buzzfeed provides readers with a modern take on a traditional newsfeed site by providing easy to read content and content that is so diverse in topics that pertain to all age groups, specifically millennials. Buzzfeed provides a reading experience that allows people of all ages to stay updated with what is going on in the world around us.
