Hello and welcome back to my passion blog. Last week I spoke and wrote about some of the most well-known and most beautiful tourist spots in Brazil, one of them being Salvador. Salvador happens to be the capital of the state of Bahia which is also the state where my family is from. I got a comment last week saying that they were interested in diving deeper and learning more about the city where my family is from and what it is like so that is exactly what I am going to do today.
My family is from, and still currently lives, in a city called Eunapolis in Bahia. Eunapois has a population of over 100,000 people (citypopulation.de) and this population only continues to grow as it started off with only about 60,000 people in the early 1990’s. Euanpolis is located more towards the southern part of Bahia and it is actually pretty far from Salvador, it is close to a 10-hour drive away. The state of Bahia itself is known for its beautiful beaches and fun plazas (more commonly known as boardwalks in America). Whenever I go to Brazil to visit my family, we always take a trip to Porto Seguro, which has the airport we always fly into and has some amazing scenery, including its beaches. There is a strip of different beaches that goes down for miles and miles in Porto Seguro all known for different things. One is specifically known for its food and delicious juices, the other one is meant for more fun and dancing and drinking, there is one that is more elegant that is for people looking to actually relax at the beach, and so much more. The beaches in Porto Seguro have something to offer to everyone.
Eunapolis is a very urbanized location compared to many of the other cities and smaller towns in Brazil. It has hospitals, churches, colleges, good schools and so much more. Most of my family in Brazil are lawyers or farmers. The idea of a farmer in Brazil is much different than the idea most Americans have in their head which is something I always thought was fascinating while growing up. There are two kinds of people that are generally roped into the one title of a farmer but are very much different in Brazil, there are the laborers that actually do the work on the fields, and then there is the owner of the farm who oversees everything and owns the land itself. These people (usually men) are sometimes referred to as cowboys as well. Most of the men in my family are the cowboy side of farmers, always walking around in nice fancy boots, a thick belt, nice jeans, and a button-down, they are always dressed to their best.
The one downfall of me visiting my family in Brazil is that when it is summer here (which is usually when I go visit) it is winter there. So I go visit, having fun on summer vacation, no school or work, everyone is in the middle of their school year or work year and I can never really hang out with anyone because everyone is always busy doing something. And I say winter but the temperature never really goes below 65 degrees in Eunapolis, I would never be able to handle their unbearable summer heat that can sometimes get to 110 degrees, and most people in Brazil do not even have AC.
That is a small and quick summary of where my family is from in Brazil and what it is like to go and visit. I love my family and I love Eurnpaolis and any chance I have to go and visit I will take it.
Wow it is super cool that your family has Brazilian roots! I looked up the beaches Bahia on my own and saw how beautiful they are. I could be wrong, but it seems like the beaches get solid exposure from the South Atlantic Ocean which can lead to really good surf. That’s enough for me to want to visit one day.
I also never knew that the school system is flipped there. Maybe you should just visit your family in the winter… that way it’ll be summer all year around for you!
